It was originally believed that the body would physically be taken to hell for eternal torment. As science progressed, and people began to realize how ridiculous that was, the idea was changed to an intangible "soul" that existed beyond the death of the body.

The Christian beliefs are very easy to understand, and the bible is quite clear in its definitions. Those definitions are simply wrong, and are easily disproven. This is why there are so many people attempting to reword the Bible, and change its true meaning.

The bible says what it says. And anyone who attempts to tweak and/or reinterpret its very simple message is lying to themselves. And I really hate to see people do that. I really do.

Because you are human and alive is why you would feel pain in Hell. The pain is the loss of God's lifegiving presence. That is the pains of Hell. That is something to truly despair. Despair is what Hell is. Note in Dante's Divine Comedy (The Inferno) that in the center of Hell is ice and not fire. Why is that? If Hell were fire it would denote passion, movement, love. Yet, since it is ice then there is no passion, no movement, no love; Despair.
However, let us not confuse or narrow pain as something experienced by our physical nervous system only. There is pain the body experiences, but there is also pains the soul experiences. Is not depression painful? Is not despair truly painful? Yet, these things are not external forces applying pressure on our physical nerves. They are internal pains or pressures that affect the soul. And so, the soul can experience pain even though intangible. And since we can feel pain even in our soul, it idicates that we are creatures that are alive and aware. If we felt nothing in body or soul, then could we truly call ourselves living?
May the Lord bless and keep you. May He let the light of His face shine upon you.
God's and your beast of burden

When you die your soul becomes seperated from your body and you wil either so sit in the presence of God as a Christian or be sent to hell. Once the final judgment day arrives our souls will reunite with our bodies. The people that are in hell with have a body to feel pain with for all eternity.

The bible does not say our soul is intangible.
I bet our spirit DOES feel pain.
The demons were spirits that wanted to be cast into swine, the legion of demons in the possessed man-they begged Jesus to not cast them in outer darkness, why I wonder.

Obviously that was thought of a long time ago. Everyone would get a virtual body and be subject to virtual pain. It's like someone holding up a sign that says, "Scream!" and everybody has to scream. It's very stressful because you have to be watching for the sign the whole time.

Oh, and you forgot the greatest pain of all, being deprived of the chance to gaze forever on the beautiful, loving face of God. You'd hate that for sure.

There are physical things and spiritul things. If you only consider one it is the reason you have not accepted God.Surely even a worldly person understands that there is other pains besides physical pain? Hell is a grave and it is thrown in to the lake of fire. One must consider more than there flesh to know spiritual things.

Who says it is intangible?
But I don't think the pain they are talking about is physical anyway. Perhaps your remorse for doing so many things contrary to the laws of God will prove to be more painful than any physical pains you could inflict on yourself.

Pain is perception... you might be thinking of burning your skin or a punch in the face kind of pain.... from a different view point than some - I would say that Hell is of your own making...
There's different kinds of pain.... think

As a kid did you ever do something wrong and felt extremely guilty or shameful of yourself? (even minor things which are big deals to children?)

Did you ever think you weren't good enough?
Did you ever turn away because it was too hard to face something like a bum on the street or getting in a confrontation?

Did you ever let someone down?

These are different perceptions...The "soul" is all your experiences, emotions, shortcomings, achievements, acceptance, denial, memories, things good or bad that you quit or gave up, things good or bad that you didn't, perserverance and determination etc....

Hell is your own perception of the pain you think you deserve...
Humans are very self-punishing without the aid of Supernatural Forces... those forces just give us something to aim for or steer clear of depending "on the dictates of one's own conscience"

The "pain" you talk about is actually complete and total seperation from God. Also, there are various levels in hell. I'm not sure if it is actually fire and brimstone for human souls, although Satan and his legion of fallen angels will be tormented like that.
