In counties where it is illegal, it is still allowed for injuries..just can't do it for cosmetic reasons..
I hate the mutilation of puppies...Only vain people would think that they can make a dog better then the way God does..
the state of NY has a law suit against the Westminster dog shows, for promoting cruelty..
AKC does allow natural dogs in the ring..but the judges are still discriminating, so a breeder has to crop n dock if he wants to raise champions.. I'll sure be glad when that isn't the case..

I don't think it is illegal any where in the U.S. as it is in Europe. You could not show a dog with the A.K.C. if it's tails and ears were not cropped according to breed. Some of those are the Doberman, Boxer, Rots etc.
This is all in the changing process because it is now thought of to be cruel and harmful to the dog. The sad part of it is, the cropping of the ears doesn't always work. It is not just cropping them by the Vet and forget it. You have to work with those ears. My friend had a Great Dane. His one ear stood up perfect and the other one flopped over. They worked and worked to no avail. The Vet was going to do it again and my friend said to forget it. It was cuter with one up and one down and they didn't want any more done to the poor dog.

Ear cropping is not illegal, is done at the discretion of the owner, and is purely for cosmetic reasons unless done to repair sustained injuries. There are some veterinarians that refuse to do this though.

Great question - sounds like you already have the answer down pat :)
Cropping is definitely a cosmetic surgery. In addition, cropping can lead to an increase in ear infections due to the sheer openess the ear constantly maintains to outside debris.
Being an AKC-registered Boxer breeder, I can tell you that cropping ears adds absolutely no value to your pet. However, it's personal choice. I chose to crop my male's (sire) ears but left my female's (dam) floppy. Now, I couldn't picture them any differently :)
Personal choice.......but check with your vet concerning the legal ramifications in your state (if any).

I know some states have tried to make it illegal but not sure if it has passed. AKC fights laws against ear cropping and such because their rules state the ears must be done. I think it is very cruel and unnecessary.

Ear cropping is indeed a cosmetic surgery and there is a growing movement to ban its pratice, as well as tail cropping and declawing cats.

don't know about the rules for various states; easy way to know is just ask any local vet. yes, it is usually just cosmetic. never heard of it being necessary due to an injury, tho i'm sure that happens from time to time.

I have not heard of it becoming illegal, but cropping is ALWAYS cosmetic. If an ear is rmoved for medical resons it is amputated.

I don't approve of ear cropping or tail cropping unless medically necessary (which is pretty rare.)
I like doggies with floppy ears and waggy tails!
