Would you give up your seat, place for an elder (whether disabled or not), even if that meant you had to stand for an hour or two at an office, church, or situation?

You know the DMV lines usually 40 to 50 people? ANd how long one must wait. Well, not to brag here but it's worth it-- I saw an elderly man come in, called him Grandpa, and said he could wait with me. Did he get overjoyed, and he didn't have to wait that long. I seriously think most people don't care about the elderly standing or waiting in long long lines, and there is no accomodation anywhere. It's sad.

WAHOO, did you read the whole thing. I did it to get him in line in front of me, so people in back of me wouldn't get miffed. Do you see? A little creativity goes a long way. What would you have said.

I love questions like this. It brings to light the few remaining strands of civility and ettiquiette.
Absolutely I would give up my seat to anyone who was elderly or a mom holding a sleeping baby, or anyone else who seemed like they needed the break more than I did.
A few months ago at church there was a special speaker and not a seat left. (I was standing along with several other people) An older gentleman came in and looked around for a seat with not luck. It took about 5 minutes but a teenager who seemed to have walked right out of a punk video (mohawk, ripped jeans over bright leggings and a fishnet shirt, gave up his seat to the older man, then stood at the back to hold the door for people. I was very surprised and impressed.
This lost virtue is not completely lost.

I think more people should live by that rule, but we live in a society of rude people who think the world revolves around them. I am reminded of a question posed to me in middle school-
if you were talking on a payphone to a friend about absolutely nothing and someone came up behind you who obviously needed the phone for an emergency, would you end your call and let the other person use the phone, or would you finish your call to your friend?
People should all have to live with some sort of obstacle in their lives just to see how the other "half" of society have it. I would say that I would give up my seat to someone else in any situation because I have had several people give their seats to me when I was pregnant and they didn't have to. they did it because it was the right thing to do.

I think that was very considerate of you.
I was at the post office once and a very old man came in. He couldn't even stand up straight and was leaning against the counter while he was in line. When a turn came up, the person said he could go in front of them, and everyone seemed to agree. Hopefully nobody would feel irritated about having to wait a little longer in that kind of a situation.

Sincerely, Yes!
If I live long enough, I will be elderly too and I hear it's no fun having old bones which cry out when you do anything at all.
I'd truly be thankful if some young person with a lot of pep in their step gave me their seat.

Absolutely. It doesn't matter if you are male or female, you should offer your seat to an elderly person or a person with a disability, or a woman who is pregnant. Shameful how many people don't do it, they look the other way, pretend not to see.
Best Regards,
Holly

I routinely give up my seat on the metro trains to elders as well as someone who is injured or pregnant women.
It's a small thing, I can stand - and maybe one day someone will return the favor if I am in need

Well done! When I used to catch the bus I would even offer my seat to a 90 year old, even though I had a baby in a carrier (the one where the baby is in a holder attached to Mom)..... somebody else then bothered to stop pretending he was sleeping and offered me his seat.

Yes. Even when not disabled, older people have a hard time standing too long. Unless you are disabled or otherwise unable to, it is just respectful to offer them your place.

Some elderly people are offended by some young person they do not know calling them grampa or grandma, so in general you need to know you are setting yourself up for a bad response in the near future. As for giving up my seat, I am handicapped so no, I wouldn't, I need it.
