If it has been raised with children it should be fine. As long as your children are not too young and are considerate. However, no dog should ever be left unsupervised with children. Also, you will need to be very careful and obtain one from a responsible breeder - some poorly bred lines are too aggressive.

They can be a wonderful family pet. Dobermans are very intelligent and highly trainable. They excel at jobs which require a lot of focus. They can be a dominant and sometimes stubborn breed, so patient, early and consistent obedience training with a gentle but firm trainer is a must and training must be a lifelong commitment (should be with any dog frankly). They need daily exercise. If raised with a cat from a puppy, it should be OK. Some adult dobermans may have too high of a prey drive to be safely kept with a cat.

Like ANY dog- yes. No matter the temperment- any dog can be great as family pets if you train them correctly. Make sure of course that any and all children are gentle however- as that should be a prime rule for any pet's safety and family safety.
Reinforce good behavior. When a child is playing with the dog, give him a treat for being well-behaved and also make him submit to your children so he knows they are the top dog; not him.
If you watch out for his safety while kids play with him, as you should for any breed big or small, and have him realize his place in the family- there shouldnt be a problem. :)

Just keep in mind- having and raising a dog can be also a fantastic learning process for your kids. Make sure you treat your dog right and with respect also. If a problem arises- get an animal behavior specialist rather than dumping him in a pound- this will show that animals, like any loved one, is not to be given up on, instead- they're worth the effort to help and maintain. As raising/taking care of a dog is a big responsibility that can have HUGE rewards. :)

'Oh yes they do!!!!! I am a devoted Doberman lover and owner.I have had a total of 9 dobies in the past 28 years. Two of my dobies also had a litter.I would get a pup that you could teach to be around children. Some adult dobies that haven't been around little children get nervous around them.If you're looking to get an older dobe check with the owners or rescue groups to see if that particular dobe does good with children. Right now I have three dobies and four grandchildren, ages 3,4,5,8 and my dogs are fine when they are around. The dogs are inside house pets. They are very loving ,devoted, intellegent and protective. Good Luck and I know you'll love the breed.

Dobes make the best family pets. Dobes are by far my dog of choice, loyal, loving, and very clever. Find a good breeder, research the breed, and if you do purchase a Dobe, enjoy to the fullest. My girl is 10 yrs old and starting to fail but I have enjoyed every minute she has been in my family.

I also keep Dobes and i think they are amazing dogs, one of mine was a rescue which i got when he was 6,my 2children were quite young at the time but he was brilliant with them,he sadly died 2yrs ago aged 13..My female Dobe we have had from a pup and she is now 6,shes not so good around young children, shes very nervous of them and doesn't like to be near them but that's only because shes not used to them so she stays near me if any children are close.. They are very loving, loyal, protective and quite funny, they are very easy to train and are very eager to please.I love my Dobe and shes very much a part of my family, without her id be so lost,so to answer your question, yes they do make great family pets.

Yes they do. My Aunt and Uncle have had them most of my life. And they always name them Sam. Anyway- very loyal, very loving and gentle. You do not need a security system when you have one. If you are to get one- get it as a puppy. You want to be the family it grows into. If he comes from another family- you never know what kind of treatment he received and if he will turn on you.
Great dogs!

they can. totally do not agree with the person who said to adopt an adult; you have no idea what that animal has been thru or what bad traits it might have picked up--you won't be able to tell until it's too late. get a young dog and raise it in your home. then you should be able to trust it and have a good pet for all ages.

We grew up with Dobies and I was a small child when I got my first, I think they are great family dogs, they are active, love to play, protective, etc. Never knew one that was mean in a family situation. Hope I helped.

Most. But like all breeds there is no general rule. Look to adopt an adult so you know what there personality is rather than buying a puppy and hoping for the best.
