The faster you can type, the easier it is to be creative as a writer. Writing is a creative, right-brain process. If you are a fast typist and have learned the skill to the point where it is virtually automatic to you, you can more easily capture thoughts as they come into your mind. If you have to be hunting and pecking out each word, your mind must focus on that chore, which is left-brain thinking. Trying to be creative while performing a left-brain chore is very difficult and will inevitably cause you to lose great ideas before you get them captured.

Just had another thought: The technology today for self-publishing has come a long way. A writer with strong word-processing skills can do much of his/her own editing and formatting, making it very possible to publish his own works without the extra expense of a publisher and editor.

There are at least 20 things in the link below that describe what word processors can do to make a writer's job simpler.

1. It allows you to easily make changes to a word you have been using over and over using the find/replace option.

2. It allows you to electronically market your creations instantaneously rather than by snail mail (regular mail)

3. You can drag and drop by highlighting, parts of sentences and move parts to other paragraphs were they make more "sense".

4. You can easily create various beginning and endings to fit what happens it between or that you like more and save copies of each to come back to.

5. You are using the same type of medium that major editors and publishers use and it is the type most require for review.

6. You can easily post a part of your work as a teaser on Internet sites to get people interested in your writing.

7. Ahem, nobody does, but you can take parts of your other works and easily incorporate them into your new work so it looks fresh without hiring re-writers and copy people.

8. You don't have to meet face to face publishers that laugh or insult you when you submit your work. (never get discouraged!)

9. For many writers its easier on your wrists than writing it out.

10. You can send the work electronically for an illustrator to easily work directly with what you have written.

11. If you use a lot of the same references and sources, you can make a file for them and just copy paste them whenever needed on a new writing project.

12. You can email your work easily to anyone you want.

13. You can destroy your total work purposely (which can be a good creative tool) with the push of a couple of buttons. Burning pages in the fireplace and piles of balled up papers is too cliche and takes too long.

14. You can count the number of words in your text, which can be very important so quickly!

15. You can make part or all of your words "read only" so changes cannot be made to your originals

16. You can use the thesaurus to quickly find out words that you have repeated over and over so it's not repetitious.

17. You can check to see if your grammar is making sense.

18. You can easily search others peoples writings to see if they have plagiarized your words.

19. Same thing in reverse, you can make sure you haven't plagiarized someone Else's work by word and text searches.

20. You can easily do the seemingly endless re-writes your publisher requests.

Typing is faster than writing
Can print a bunch of copies at once instead of writing it over and over again
Can check for spelling mistakes
Can change the writing easier, like different fonts and bold and underline
Can delete mistakes easily
Easier to go back and edit and change things
Can save something you're writing and work on it on another computer
If you wreck the original copy you can print out another one.

That's all I can think of.

you can also set them up to do automatic corrections and capitalization's
there is a word search for looking for and replacing words
unlike a typewriter you can save your manuscript to a disk and add to or delete pages or text

You don't have to use carbon paper to make more than one copy of your work.

You don't have to use correction fluid to fix mistakes.

You can easily see, change and/or rearrange your work without having to start over with a blank sheet of paper.

You have spell-check to help proof-read your work.
