we didn't evolve with the AIDS disease but die from it unlike other monkeys?

The thing is we did NOT evolve from monkeys. This is just a creationist scare tactic. Apes and humans evolved from hominids. We are completely different species and do not come from monkeys.

Humans and chimpanzees, although very closely related genetically, are different enough that even though they can get the same diseases that don't always affect the different species the same. Quite a bit of AIDS research is why the chimpanzees do not die from it - if we could figure that out then we might be able to find a way to treat it in humans. Also the virus mutated from when it jumped from apes to humans - probably through meat as in some ares people eat chimps and monkeys - so it isn't quite the same virus.

What the heck are you asking? I make no sense of that. Do you know anything about viral evolution? The happens every day! That's how AIDS evolved from being a monkey disease to being one that humans can catch. That's why the flu vaccines only work on certain strains. What does that have to do with human evolution?

Survival of the fittest. Here's a hypothetical to show you how it works:

A group of monkeys has SIV (Simian immunodeficiency virus. Monkey HIV).

Monkeys don't get medical treatment.

SIV kills all the monkeys it can.

SIV can't kill all the monkeys, because there's something different (a mutation) about some of the monkeys and they become only carriers, it can't harm them.

Now only monkeys that are immune to SIV are left, the rest are dead, and the survivors will have offspring that will also have that immunity.

Until SIV adapts (if ever), these monkeys are immune to it. Get it?

It would happen with humans, too, if allowed to run its course, but we don't let that happen, it would be considered cruel.

*rubs his forehead*

We didn't evolve from monkeys. We share a common ancestor with the species of monkey which had the strain of SIV that successfully mutated into HIV. HIV is a highly mutable virus, as is SIV. The species that carried SIV has evolved for so long with it that the entire species practically infected -- but their species also evolved specific immunological defenses to keep it from causing disease. In essence, they're all carriers, but few will get SAIDS (simian aquired immuno-deficiency syndrome).

Humans are already showing signs of making the same evolution that those monkeys did. One in 100 caucasion males (the rates are not known for other races or genders) contains a defective copy of the gene that codes for the cellular membrane protein that is the primary infection route of the HIV particle. These individuals can carry the virus without significant loss of immune function indefinately.

Children born to parents who have HIV but not this gene will get the disease at an age that it can kill them before they procreate. This means those without this gene are at greater risk of HIV related death before procreating, no matter how slightly greater that risk my be. Evolution deals in HUGE numbers, entire populations or sub-populations, over thousands of years if not millions, depending on the strength of the selective pressure.

SIV and HIV are direct evidence of viral evolution and the propagation of adaptive alleles in populations.

The virus only evolved fairly recently, long after the monkeys ancestors and our ancestors split. The specific species of monkey that first had AIDS has had time to adapt to the virus. But the virus has jumped to us very recently and we haven't had time to adapt to it yet.

We didn't evolve from monkeys! No-one with a modicum of scientific knowledge would ever suggest such a ridiculous idea. That silly notion is mentioned only by scientifically ignorant fundamentalist religious zealots attempting "disprove" the findings of science.

Obviously we did not evolve from monkeys.

My point exactly. We didn't evolve from monkeys.
And if we would quit having sex and doing drugs then maybe we wouldn't have so much AIDS.

Why not ask this in the Biology section where you might get an educated answer?
