Actual transportation would be hard for free, unless you can find a courier service that needs someone. Some places hire people to fly with documents or other goods that they want hand delivered and not sent via post. Not easy to find this though. Hitchhiking will work in many countries as well. Or get a cheap car of your own and pick up hitchhikers that are willing to kick in for gas.

As for lodging while you travel, if the weather is nice you can toss a sleeping bag lots of places. Also many hostels give free lodging in exchange for doing work, like cleaning bathrooms. Look for pubs that have happy hours where they offer free food, also many have daily specials very very cheap. I know one guy who lived on the fruit that grew on local plants thruout Spain :-) In Britain, I lived on beans & toast for about 5-pound per week. You could also try to barter work in pubs for meals.

In many countries, it is also possible to busk to make money (i.e., street performances - have any skills?) Many people follow the festivals around the world busking and picking up seasonal work in the pubs (they are not picky about checking visas during these busy seasons and pay cash). A guy I know who did the dilver man routine would make 100-200 pound in 2-hours in Dublin during peak season.

It is definitely doable if you are not uppity about where you stay and what you eat. Just be ultra friendly wherever you go so people what to help you out.
