For their overall health - it's not a bad idea. Getting natural sugar - from fruit, etc is better than refined stuff. HOWEVER - as someone else pointed out - you might want to allow some sweets (like on special occaisions or something) because otherwise, they might sneak them later.

When I met my future wife, she had 3 boys, 4,6, and 7 years old. My wife is like being married to Betty Crocker's little sister. She would bake cookies and pies and cakes all the time. I put my foot down because the boys were acting like wild animals. NO SUGAR!!!!! Sweets are supposed to be a treat, not a staple part of a daily diet. In 6 months time, my boys were calm and their school grades went up. Stay away from packaged foods, and from so-called healthy food in the freezer. It's packed with sugar. Give them fruit, not cookies, and even then give the fruit when it's just before or after meals, fructose has the same affect, but getting them in the habit of eating healthy sweets. A lot of parents act like it's child abuse if you don't feed the kids sugar, they are the ones who will be raising the next generation of kids with ADD, Diabetes, and Autism.

I'd like to do the same thing with my daughter, with the exception of offering sweets for special events like birthdays, Christmas, easter, etc. What's a birthday party without a cake?!?
Like someone commented, there is enough sugar naturally in fruits that your child wont somehow suffer from not eating sweets. You're doing great! I know many parents who hand out sweets all the time as bribes...

Neither do I and people think I'm weird. We don't allow pop either. We do allow it once in a while. Remember everything in moderation. By the way my oldest is 10 and has only had one cavity, and my other 3 have never had any. I have a friend you lets her kids eat sweets, junk food, and drink pop and her three kids have had to have teeth pulled on more than one occasion.

Depends on how old your child is......if they are still young or toddlers you can leave it out.....their tastebuds are sensitive and sugar will give them a high.......
and since you give them all natural stuff to begin with....they don't need the added perservatives or salt or seasoning to their foods....
And sugar will overtake them......they will all fall for the sweet things....so if you give in moderation......or as rewards you're off to a good habit for the kids....

you can't DEPRIVE them and you shouldn't OVER INDULGE them either.....

yes it is, i dont give my child any sugar either and she has no cavities. maybe as she gets older i will at a moderate pace but right now she dont need it. I see other parents around me give it to their children and they are bouncing off the walls, I'd rather wait.

You may want to allow some things in moderation. If you don't your child may rebel when they are older and go overboard with sweets.
Save the sweets for special occasions and you'll be fine.

You don't want your kids to rebel later and overdo the sweets so I think it's best to teach them to eat sweets in moderation once in a while.

Oh for goodness sakes--let them be children! Cupcakes and candy aren't going to hurt them as long as they eat other healthy things.
