Join the telephone preference service. It wont stop them completely, but it will get rid of the majority and when they do call all you have to say is youre registered with TPS and they go as then it is in breach of something. ne is also available for mail and faxes.

No they are not legal under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (E.C. Directive) Regulations 2003. It is therefore UNLAWFUL to make 'unsolicited' direct marketing calls to individuals who have registered with the Telephone Preference Service, and indicated they do not consent to receive such calls.
The TPS is a central register and people register their name and number with the register to stop these 'unsolicited' calls. It is a legal requirement for any organisation (who are cold Calling or are involved in direct marketing), to purchase the TPS list and filter out all the registered numbers.
Therefore, if somebody calls you and assures you they are not selling anything, but at a later date they are, this is classed as an unsolicited call! So don't be fooled for a second.
HOWEVER, there is an exception: As the TPS service is only available to BT customers, as a free service, there are millions of household registered nation-wide with the TPS! Because of this, Market Research companies (genuine market research companies) do not make 'unsolicited' calls, and are not breaking the law if they call TPS numbers because they are not required to screen people from the register in the same way as other companies do. The calls are not 'unsolicited,' as they are for research purposes only, and the information you provide is used only for research purposes. As long as the company are a member of the Market Research Society, (MRS), which you will know because they will offer you the number to check this before if you request it or uneasy about accepting the call, and they will always give you it at the end of the call if you want it anyway. Any 'research' company that doesnt claim to be a member I would be extremely weary about, because you will not be able to check they are genuine.
So there you have it. To be honest though it is a good job the can call, because how ever would organisations know what consumers wanted if they were not able to find out by way of market research!!!

Unfortunately it is. Theyre bugging a lot of people. Best thing to do is apply for BT Privacy which enrols you in the Telephone Preference Service and gets you caller display for free.
Power calling is the worst where they phone you repeatedly and only connect the first few answers to an operator, hanging up on the rest! Its an invasion of privacy, Have a look on google under power calling, its quite interesting reading.

In the U.S. it is illegal, but it doesn't stop political campaign workers. If you didn't get on the Do Not Call Registry, then I suggest you get on there. Telemarketers are not allowed to call anyone's phone number on that registry. It's by the Federal govt. and it's free.

Sadly, yes. It's legal.

If you are in the US, you can head to www.donotcall.gov and register your phone number on the "do not call" list.

This will get you off of most databases, and it's very easy to lodge a complaint against any firm that continues to call (and they will be fined!)

Other than that, you must specifically tell EVERY caller to remove you from their list. You must also log the date, time and name of company that called you. If they call back, you can then tell them you asked to be removed on ____ and you will be filing a complaint to the FCC.

YES!!! (unfortunately)
Just wind them up. That's what I do. Keep them talking for 40 mins (they are paying for the call) Make them beg for the sale then tell them NO and hang up. always makes me laugh :)
