There are a few different reasons:

In epilepsy, seizures are caused by the brain basically short-circuiting. Usually it's because there is too much brain activity for the brain to process correctly. Seizures can be triggered by flashing lights, stress, a head injury, etc. Epilepsy can be caused by many varying things such as genetics, injury, food poisoning, etc...

Infants and small children can have a type of seizure called a "febrile seizure." This is caused by a fever that rises suddenly. Many people wrongly assume they are caused by a high fever. It's not how high the fever goes, it's how rapidly it rises.

Another type of seizure is psychological in nature, such as those that occur in catatonic schizophrenics. These seizures are caused by the psychiatric condition.

Persons with diabetes can suffer seizures when their blood sugar drops too low.

Some people have blood disorders that cause them to have seizures. These are called non-epileptic seizures, usually.

So basically there are two root causes. One is psychological and the other is physiological. One is caused by the brain and/or body, and the other is caused by the mind.

There are a different variety of seizures...The most frightening is the Grand Mal seizure all the way down to the twitch in your eyelid. Causes are as wide and varied as there are colors. Some are caused by a chemical in the brain, some are caused by a nerve problem, some are caused by tumors, some are caused by light patterns, some are physiological and only your doctor can determine what is causing them for sure. Please if you or a loved one are having seizures, don't get advice here, go see your doctor...

Similar to getting water on an electrical panel. Some outside source (trauma) or internal source (tumors, fevers etc) causes the communications within the brain to stop or become interrupted. When the cause is found you can begin to slow them or eliminate them. Some people need medication assistance and some will grow out of them.

Seizures are caused by misfiring nuerons in the brain. Sometimes it's random other times it's from damaged regions. They're not quite positive what exactly causes the misfiring, like what chemicals or all that.
Sometimes it's genetic, other times it's caused by accidents, illnesses, general misbalances, and many other things.
