That is a very good question... see I am Mexican and I have to say that the wall would work both ways. I go to El Paso Texas very often, being that my parents are from Chihuahua Mexico. Did you know that there are THOUSANDS of WHITE Americans that live in Juarez Mexico? See, they work in El Paso, then they drive back to Mexico because their money goes a lot further. SO they live in Mexico but take the American money to build 50K dollar mansions that would cost them 800K here in the US. They cross the border to work in the US, to do their shopping in the US and to do their schooling in the US.... should the Mexican people be offended because the WHITE Americans are living in Mexico? They aren't gaining anything from it? Do you know that THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of Mexicans have their papers and cross over into the US to do their shopping? They are helping the American economy because believe it or not..... it is really expensive to live in Mexico and they get paid at the most $250.00 dollars a week. Everyone talks about taxes, and your money going to those illegals.... NEWS FLASH... your tax money goes to all those crooked cops and all those teachers that molest children..... ALL the illegals working here in the US pay their taxes.... Unlike you, they do not file their tax returns. GUESS WHO GETS THE MONEY? The US government.
The question should be: How long to break the wall I have built out of ignorance? Maybe if the wall is built, everyone wanting to party will stop crossing the border into Mexico to do so. MAYBE if the wall is built, just MAYBE, all those other races/nationalities will stop using Mexico as a way of getting across. Maybe just MAYBE all the Italian Mafia and the Columbian Mafia and any other Mafias out there will quit using Mexico as a way to transport their drugs. Worry about things that matter. I am American/Mexican and it scares the crap out of me knowing that a terrorist can fly a plane into the US because the president helps all those countries out and guess what...there is no wall in the air preventing it! If the US government helped Mexico instead of helping out all those terrorist countries, the Mexican people would not have to leave Mexico to feel safe and support their families.

It will probably be during the next presidents term and it will only work as good as the FENCE they will build not a wall which means that its going to need surveillance cameras and infrared devices thermo detection systems and many more Law enforcement officials to help protect our boarders which basically means they will still make it over here....However they Need to build an actual wall like the great wall of china but its too expensive and will never happen

I just answered a similar question a few days ago. I'll repost what I typed. (The answer is between the stars.)
*****
What I would do:
a. Height: At least 15 feet.
b. Fence type: Chain-link fence with razor wire and barbed wire intertwined through it. (Anyone who is stupid enough to try and climb it will get exactly what they deserve.) There will be one wide gate that can be opened to let buses, trucks, cars, etc. through every 25 miles.
c. Other forms of security:
1. Cameras wherever the border patrol deems it necessary.
2. ARMED border patrol agents with vehicles best suited to the rocky desert terrain. They will patrol the border and be stationed at the gates. (They'll check the interior of the buses, trucks, cars, etc.)
3. Small helicopters to patrol from overhead.
4. (Hopefully.) Start pulling in U.S. troops and start sticking them on the border.
5. Force anyone that leaves food, water, and/or medical supplies on the border to leave. Then, take the supplies away.
-Incidentally: Leave about three inches of fencing without wire on the bottom just to make sure that small lizards, etc. won't get cut. I'd also keep a few veterinarians on hand. Also, if Mexico or some "do-gooder" wants to send doctors, fine. Just remind them that:
a. They are going to have to pay for the treatments with their OWN money.
b. The illegals will be immediately deported when they get bandaged up and ready to start the road to recovery.
c. Any potential anchor-babies born on U.S. soil would not get an automatic path to citizenship. Instead, they'd get sent back to Mexico with their mother's citizenship.
*****
-Now, you asked "Will it work"? As long as the entire border will be kept under surveillance, the Rio Grande will also be monitored, and there will be repair crews ready to fix the fence and rerun the wires through it, things should work out fine. ;) Also, I'd give the fence two years to be completed. After all, it took only a few months to clean up Ground Zero.....

ok here is how we do it
first build it along the hole southern areas
then put electricity running through it obviously some animals will get shocked but overall it will work
then put national guards about every three miles acrost it
give these guards the order to shoot after two warnings
two warnings should be enough
then after its built do a study and see if these people are willing to go as far as all the way west and east and if they are again build more fense yes it will cost a great deal
but no more then what we normaly pay out of taxes

l It worked well for China. But then, they didn't have ergonomic shovels, boats, planes, cars, trucks or buses then. The government can't even put together an accurate list of terrorists let alone build a wall. Congress wil never appropriate money for this vast a project prior to a presidential election. Of course we could could provide incentives for the Mexican government to boost their economy and patrol their borders. But then that's too logical for our bozo politicians to come up with.

Depends a lot on when they start, doesn't it? They are supposed to have 'operational control' of the border in 18 months if Bush signs the Secure Fence Act which I understand he has not signed yet (just the funding bill including 1.2 billion for fencing, barriers and similar elements).
Is it going to work?
Well, not without enforcement, obviously. It is a start, though.

How long is the Mexican / US Border?
then I'd add a couple more miles on each end.
