Sociologically and culturally, at one time it was not only a GOOD idea, but a NECESSARY idea. One must have a feeling of safety and security, however transitory, in order to sit down and start doing the things required of building a culture. One cannot sit and write a poem if concerned that at any time, a tiger may leap on you from behind and tear you apart. Deity provided the first sense of comfort for humanity. It gave a reason to hold to the social contract, and made the social contract extend after death. If Ogg promised to do something for Grog's wife, but Grog died, why would Ogg have to fulfill his promise? Because Grog was waiting beyond death and would KNOW!

However, the deific hypothesis is really no longer needed. The greeks were aware of the folly of their gods. Many greek writers make it clear that they believed in the efficacy of the rituals, but not the gods the rituals were to but the people doing the rituals. They had a general idea of scientific methodology and took solice in that.

When society collapsed during the "dark ages" (I know, I hate the term too...), God became useful again... the idea provided security and stability and allowed man to rebuild.

Unfortunately, people haven't let go yet.

And if society were to collapse again, the deific hypothesis would be the only hope for rebuilding, even if it's wrong.

Whew, sorry I'm late! I was answering the question: "Is humanity God's latest bad idea?"

No, that's not the oldest. The oldest bad idea was trying to take Gronk's mammoth bone away from him.

God wasn't too bad of an idea. "If you don't agree with us, you're going to hell" was a bad idea.
