You need to find out the cause before you can decide on a cure. But being as you are 72 years old, I expect it is just old age wear and tear.

Try taking gelatin, one pack mixed with juice a day. My dad had a slipped disc and constant back pain and he has been doing this every day for the last 10 years and the change is amazing! He looks younger (he no longer walks bent over) and has no pain.
It takes about a month before you will feel the effect so you can't give up on it. Good luck!

Having just been diagnosed with Degenerative Disc Disease myself at the age of 53 I recommend that you visit a Spine Center and have some xrays done.
Luckily I have caught it in early stages and hope to find the best way to avert anymore problems but all in all we are experiencing normal aging processes.
A friend of mine has it in it's worse form and lived in constant pain but sought out a Spine Center and they are using technology developed by NASA and she swears by it.
Proper back movement is essential. No more bending at the waist to pick things up but using our legs to help us pick things up. No more turning at the waist to reach for things,we now have to move over to the object we are reaching for.
Warm up or stretching of the back muscles before we try to go about our normal day is important as well.
I sought out a Chiropractor when visits to my Family Physician didn't help with the pain I was having and the xrays they did helped to diagnose my problem and 4 manipulations along with 2 Ultrasound treatments and discussion with my Chiropractor helped me to see what I can do for myself to help with my new diagnosis.
Good Luck

I have a bad back for as long as I can remember. I am 70 yrs. old. I go to a chiropractor ever two to three weeks for treatments. My wife also has arthritis and it took me 40 years to get her to go see him. It won't cure you but it might help you. Medicare will cover the cost after you have meant your deductible.

Maybe a chiropractor could help. One helped me, it was the best money I ever spent. Aside from that, you might have some good results with good old aspirin, and a soak in a hot bath. Good luck!!
