It costs an average of 45,000 dollars a year to imprison, feed, cloth, and gaurd a prison inmate, a man in the US can live quite comfortable on 45 thousand a year, for a family it would be tough but still. On the other hand you can feed thousands in a third world country where the US dollar is like gold. In addition jails in the USA are becoming increasingly overpopulated, so the alternative to a new system is a whole slew of new jails Considering all this could lashes or something of the sort be a viable alternative to jail time for crimes like armed robbery and minor assult, things that people commit all the time, get 5-20 years and clog the system, could corporal punishment be the answer?

Just a note, the constitution does not say "no corporal punishment" it dictates no "cruel and unusual" punishment, and in my opinion lashes are neither overly cruel or unusual in fact for decades after the constitution was sighned hangings, lashes, and stocks were still common and effective anti-crime mesures in the US

I recently retired from a 27 year career in corrections and have long been in favor of corporal punishment, not as an alternative to incarceration, as an enhancement to it and deterrent to probation violation. Inmates are the biggest bunch of whiners when it comes to physical discomfort of any kind. If they get a little headache or sniffle, they on an officer's leg begging for aspirin or a decongestant immediately. Their whole world revolves around physical stimulation. A good caning on the courthouse steps would go a long way to preventing probation violation and would reduce recidivism. The canings ought to be broadcast on closed circuit TV in the jail instead of MTV and cartoons.

No... corporal punishment can selection everywhere from 'spanking' to 'caning' to 'flagellation'. Capital punishment is the death penalty. So strictly speaking of corporal punishment, i'm not in desire of inflicting actual soreness for any reason, extraordinarily allowing the state to grant actual soreness in what we could designate as legally. As for capital punishment, i'm in desire of protecting the possibility for the death sentence in quite violent crimes. although, i believe the sentencing listening to could desire to in basic terms grant the death sentence whilst they are able to conclusively say that all of the information factors to guilt. The worst ingredient we are able to do as a society is kill an harmless guy. Liberal.

The idea of corporal punishment is strictly your opinion. Other courts have found that it could be construed at such. Sorry but you opinion doesn't mean a whole lot.

No, it's just a step beneath sharia justice. "Cruel and unusual" might be an abused term, but if it applies anywhere, it applies to corporal punishment.

yes, take Singapore's example: they apply harsh corporal punishment for minor crimes and give the death sentence for the third strike. Very few criminals actually end up in prison and the crime rate is very small.

No, jail is jail. No matter how you wish to sugar coat it. We should do just what is supposed to be done. Letting people off is how we got to where we are today as far as crime is concerned. Were making one big mess hole for ourselves.

Put them away for ever, make them work hard everyday, no books, no computers, no t.v, they deserve absolutely nothing, but a hard way to go. Treat them worse than slaves, treat them exactly likes they treated their victim's, have no mercy on them. Now I will climb off of my soapbox.Have a nice day.
