We filed I485 for my husband back in Oct 2004 and still no word. I have done congressional inquiries, fbi inquiries, as well as my own inquiries. I also went to Chicago district office to find out what is going on. No one can give us an answer other than it's still pending the FBI background check. Just keep bugging them and be patient.

I used to work for immigration, and trust me, you're not the only one who feels like they're waiting forever to get your case approved. Please understand that there are millions of people trying to achieve the same goal you are, and most immigration offices are completely swamped all the time. With that being said, you could go to www.uscis.gov and get an infopass appointment. That way, you can go right to your nearest immigration office and speak to a real person. If they're as nice as the people I used to work with, they should be able to get you a status check within a few minutes. It's a lot less frustrating than trying to check it online or over the phone. But make sure you have an appointment before you go there. They probably won't let you in if you don't have one. Good luck, and thank you for immigrating here the legal way!

First of all check if your Priority date is current> If not then wait for it to be current. Secondly if your priority date is current then you might want to write to your local Congress person and let him address the issue.
Thirdly it is very common that your Back Ground check is not clear yet. It is fairly common and it does take time.
