When you're released they open the door and allow you to leave. When you're discharged they put you on a catapult and fling you over the wall. LOL
They mean the same thing.

If you are discharged, you have completed your sentence. If you are released, you may be doing probation or parole. However both terms are used interchangeably, therefor creating confusion.

Nothing that I'm aware of. The statute(s) in my state utilize both words interchangeably.
