They supposedly broke his legs so he would sag down and suffocate.

I imagine that would suck.

Edit - to the poster below, using a graphic description of the pain of crucifixion to drive home the point of worshipping Christ...

Just like Mel Gibson's movie, it is simply propoganda. Jesus is not the only person who was crucified. Countless people have endured the same fate. Countless other people have died in ways which are even more horrible.

However, that does not prove that Jesus was the son of a god, or that he even existed. In fact, it's quite likely that he didn't exist at all.

But yes, the story of the crucifixion is very moving, and very disturbing. But I could write the same story myself, today. And I could put any fictional character I wanted through the same ordeal. In fact, if you want to watch the move "Saw", you'll probably see a few things that would make Jesus' death look like a picnic.

My point is... shock and awe don't make a story true. Don't get so wrapped up in scare tactics, and people appealing to your emotions. Look at the facts.

assuming the NT is true (which I don't think it is), most probably blood loss.
He was stabbed in his abdomen. That would kill someone pretty quickly from blood loss.
Asphyxiation from hanging on the cross would take much longer.

(on the side, if you have to get shot, its better to get shot in the lung than the abdomen for this same reason. just make sure the guy doesn't hit your heart.)

I believe it was asphyxiation. He did bleed alot but I don't think that the wounds were bad enough to have killed Him. If they were than wouldn't He have died while He was being whipped? If you are nailed to a cross or a wall or anything like that after a while you become very tired. Once you are tired than you sort of give up, lean over and suffocate.

Dear carl, I belive scientific evidence has found that the physical death of Jesus came both from the fact he had been beaten and brused and was losing blood, and from the fact tht he died from asphyxiation and suffocation from the crucifixion. But morre importantly is why Jesus died. let me explain by asking you imoprtant questions.

Do you consider yourself to be a good person?

have you ever lied? stolen? looked with lust? ever used Gods name in vain?
If you have done those things the BIble says your guilty of sinning against a Holy God and the penalty for your sin is death and hell. but Jesus suffered and died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins. you broke the Law and Jesus paid your fine with his own blood. and carl, if you will repent (apoligize and turn from your sin, and trust in Jesus fuyully as Lord and savior,God will forgive you and grant you everlasting life.
God Bless

Gravity pulls you down and puts pressure on your bowels until they evacuate. Your lungs and heart, kidneys and liver have no support and begin to shut down. The pain would be excruciating. Jesus' side was pierced by a soldier who felt sorry for him and was trying to hurry Jesus' death. It would take days for someone to die on the cross. Shock and heart and kidney failure would be the first causes of death. It is amazing how cruel people could be.

Most crucifixion victims died of asphyxiation, apparently. They became too weak to keep supporting their head, whick would roll down, blocking their windpipe.

A medical doctor provides a description of the crucifixion of Jesus.

After Jesus was brutally beaten and scorged with the cat of nine tails beyond human recognition,The cross is placed on the ground, and the exhausted Jesus is quickly thrown backwards, with His shoulders against the wood. The soldier feels for the depression at the front of the wrists, not the palm of the hand. He drives a heavy, square wrought-iron naiil through the wrist deep into the wood. Quickly he moves to the other side and repeats the action, being careful not to pull the arms too tightly, but to allow some flex and movement. The cross is then lifted into place. The left foot is pressed backward against the right foot, and with both feet extended, toes down, a nail is driven through the arch of each, leaving the knees flexed. the victim is now crucified.

As He slowly sags down with more weight on the nails in the wrists, and not on the hands as believed and depected in pictures and on crosses, excruciating fiery pain shoots along the fingers and up the arms to explode in the brain--the nails in the wrist are putting pressure on the median nerves. As He pushes Himself upward to avoid this stretching torment, He places the full weight on the nail through His feet. Again He feels the searing agony of the nail tearing through the nerves between the bones of His feet.

As the arms fatigue, cramps sweep through His muscles, knotting them with deep relentless, and throbbing pain. With these cramps comes the inability to push Himself upward to breathe. Finally, carbon dioxide builds up in the lungs and in the blood stream, and the cramps partially subsided. Spasmodically, He is able to push Himself upward to exhale and bring in life-giving oxygen. Hours of limitless pain, cycles of twisting, joint-renting cramps, intermittent partial asphyxiation, searing pain as tissue is torn from His lacerated back as He moves up and down against rough timber. Then another agony begins: a deep, crushing pain begins deep in the chest as the pericardius slowly fills with serum and begins to compress the heart.

It is now almost over. The loss of tissue fluids has reached a critical level. The compressed heart is struggling to pump heavey, thick sluggish blood into the tissues. The tortured lungs are making frantic effort to gasp in small gulps of air. He can feel the chill of death creeping through His tissues. Finally, He allows His body to die.

All this the Bible records with the simple words, "And they crucified Him" Mark 15:24

For those of you who can read this graphic indepth description, of how Jesus willingly gave up His life, so you can have eternal life, but still reject His free gift of salvation by refusing to accept Him for this sacrifice. You will not only have to live with that choice, but will surely die by it as well.

If you wish to accept Jesus as your savior today, take one minute of your time and say this prayer...

Here is your way to obtain salvation.
If you want to accept Christ, you can ask Him to be your Savior and Lord by praying a prayer like this:

"Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. I ask you in to my life and heart to be my Lord and Savior. I want to serve you always." In the precious name of Jesus, amen

Did you pray this prayer? I pray your answer was YES If you want to know how much did Jesus love you.. He stretched out His arms wide, and with out a wimper, He quietly died.
