It was overheating, a/c & heat doesn't work. Knew it must need a new radiator and brought it in. The mechanic tells me that the radiator, front breaks, & heating coil need replacing. It should cost about $1200.00. This is a make or break deal, I guess. I don't have the money, (just got a job after 8 months out-of-work), but could really use the car. Is it worth it? If not, what would be a reasonable selling price? Thanks so much for the help. I really appreciate it. - DLee

well i know the heater core on that model isnt a fun job and expensive. if you dont need the heat right now dont fix the heater core just bypass it. that should save about 400 bucks. its not if the car is worth it, the question is other than these problems do you feel ok about the reliability of this vehicle or are you willing to take a chance and buy another vehicle that may or may not have similar problems or other more expensive problems down the road ???

id fix it and use it, its low millage and they are pretty reliable besides the transmissions but if you take care of it it can last you a little while, just my opinion

Are you using a dealership? If so go somewhere else because they are the most expensive places to have work done. Go to another reliable repair shop and get at least 1 more estimate. If you just got a job you also do not need a car note right now so getting it fixed is in your best interest. With only 50K miles on it you are in good shape and the mustang will last many years yet . If you can find someone who will let you pay out the repair over a short period of time (like 6 months) you will be good to go. My husbands mustang had 200K on it when an Expedition killed it. It still ran beautifully.

A car that old, with that low of mileage obviously hasn't been driven regularly, therefore, must have some rust build up and moisture in the engine. Like the post stated, those engines were prone to blowing head gaskets, which is an expensive repair. It would probably be beneficial to sell it, while you can still get SOME money for it. Unfortunately, the 3.8L V6 convertible Mustangs don't hold that much value, compared to the 5.0L V8 Mustangs, as far as collectibility is concerned, so you won't get that much for it. Establish yourself at your new job first, then save your money to buy yourself a newer vehicle that will be more reliable for your needs. Don't make this vehicle a "money pit".

Get another opinion from a reputable shop, or someone you know can fix your car. This sounds like a good car still.
You can take the radiator out yourself and get another one , if it even needs to be replaced. It could have been out of water or needs to be rotted out, maybe $200.
The heater core could be leaking inside the passenger floorboard and can be a chore to replace, but not more than $200.
If the brakes are working, wait a few months till you get it running, but can be fixed by putting the brake shoes on yourself, $100.
As far as the A/C goes, this should be fixed later as you have the money available. Don't junk it if it's paid for. Everybody wants a new car, but no one needs debt.

sorry to hear about your car , those heaters are a royal pain to replace, bypass it, the only problem is what caused the overheating ? those motors eat head gaskets and it would be a shame to do all that work and have it start to belch white smoke in a week or two. sell it to an automotive student for 1200 and take the bus sorry

ok brakes aren't that much maybe a 100 buck--radiator have it fixed not replaced--save lots---heater coil you only need that for heat--if you can handle a lil cold for now-hace someone disconnect it--that way it wont fog up your window when you drive--your air will still work fine--after you save up some cash get the heater coil fixed-----BEEN THERE DONE THAT SEVERAL TIMES

A HEATER CORE IS NO MORE THAN 20.00$....A RADIATOR MAYBE 200.$ FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT FOR YOU DONT YOU HAVE ANY FRIENDS THAT CAN DO IT I MEAN THE PARTS ARENT THAT MUCH ITS THE LABOR THATS GONNA GET YOU BUT THE CAR ONLY HAS 50,000 MILE ON IT SO ITS WORTH FIXING

Stock, with a manual transmission, either low 6 second or high 5 second range, depending on the driver.

Don't bother. It's probably only worth 1,750 so just sell the parts and get a new car.
