I intended to mention that I wasn't including IBC either... sorry. Thanks for the 1919 suggestion

IBC is my personal favourite. Get it at the grocery. If I can't have that the only other one I"ll drink is A&W. Their diet is as good as their regular.

The best that is not Barq's or Dad's is a tossup between Thomas Kemper and Henry Weinherd (sp?) both of which you usually find in the liquor section at most groceries even though they are non-alcoholic.

Btw, most people don't know this but the A&W root beer that is sold in stores tastes nothing like the A&W root beer that you get at the restaurants. Not sure why that is.

I used to live in an area where you could find roadside "rootbeer stands." They were generally only open during the warm weather months, though. Most were pretty good and much better than the national brands. Or try making your own.

Goose Island rootbeer just rocks! It has that great sweet and creamy taste, followed by just the right amount of fizzy bite. A nice head of foam, too. And... for the ULTIMATE ... toss in some French Vanilla ice cream for the best rootbeer float in the world.

sigh ...

Must .... go..... get.....some.... rootbeer.... now......

There is a restaurant in my hometown that makes their own rootbeer on the premises. I would crawl through the desert to get a glass of that stuff. I could drink a gallon of it in one day sometimes.

Mug root beer was my favourite when I was growing up. Picked it up in San Francisco when I was on holiday there.
