Was just curious if it was really bad for children to eat raw eggs, or if our parents just lied to us for the fun of it.

Raw eggs can sometimes carry salmonella, not a pretty disease, but the key word there is "sometimes." I always licked the spoon and I have seen weight trainers drinks raw eggs for protein, so I say lick away!!

In the old days there was a serious fear of salmonella poisoning from raw eggs. This was mainly before eggs were "pasteurized" so to speak.

Now a days, people drink raw eggs as a protein shake. There's nothing wrong with it at all.

Lick away!

My mom always told me not to because of the possibility of getting salmonella from the raw eggs. I don't know if this is true or not, though.

too much raw egg isn't good... My mom always let us lick the spoon, but only of there was just a little batter on it... :) lets be honest, I've watched someone drink 4 raw eggs... they're still alive and welll and never got sick from it... what could a small lick or two do?!

Raw egg may contain bacteria that can make you sick (like salmonella). That is why your mother tells you not to lick the spoon with raw egg residue.

Raw eggs can contain bacteria that will make young children and people with compromised immune systems very sick. That's why you shouldn't let your kids lick the spoon if mixing something with eggs in it.

once upon a time... before lois pasture came up with his phenomenal idea of the pasteurization process, fear of bacteria including salmonella was what kept someone from licking the spoon, or just eating raw cookie dough. however, since almost all eggs now are pasteurized - lick away! i love cookie dough! my mom and grandma both still tell me not to do it. i laugh at them and even let my niece have some too. aggravates my mom... she won't believe me - i even showed her on the eggs that it says pasteurized and she still has issues with it! haha!
