My 17 year old son was in the shower last night and I "accidentally" walked in on him drying off and I saw, right above his butt-crack, the words "Arbeit Macht Frei" tattooed in red ink. First of all, he is not allowed to have a tattoo while living in my house! And second, does anyone know what this means and why would he have it tattooed right there?

He probably got the tattoo right there because its easy to hide.
I searched for the meaning of it and this is what came up:

Arbeit macht frei is a German expression meaning work makes free.

This slogan was employed by the Nazis in the years 1930. It is the General SS Theodor Eicke who ordered the affixing of the sentence to the entry of concentration camps, in particular Auschwitz and Dachau.

Arbeit macht frei is also the title of a song of the English group The Libertines left in 2004 on the album éponyme The Libertines

You really need to talk to him about this!
Good luck.

You need to have a VERY SERIOUS talk with that boy!! Not exactly for the tattoo, but for it's meaning. " Work Brings Freedom." A phrase used by Nazis. And the reason he would have put it there on his body, would be to hide it. Easy place. C'mon, you would have never seen it if you didn't accidently walk in on him.
Right now your son needs some guidance. It seems he has fallen into a bad crowd. Because OBVIOUSLY he knew what it was before he got it done!!
*** Also, I don't know about where you live, but the LEGAL age to get a tattoo is 18 here. So I am guessing it's not a professional job. Take him to a doctor to get him checked out for diseases that can be passed through needles. More than likely he got it done by some idiot with a home-made gun.
***Having that tattoo removed will cost you a fortune. I know you don't believe in him having a tattoo, but I would take him to a licensed tattoo parlour and get a cover up done. They should do it with your consent.

"Arbeit Macht Frei" means "work brings freedom" in German it was posted over the gates of concentration camps. I think you might have a bit more to worry about than a tattoo. You might want to find out if your son is involved in a nazi group.

you have rather made your self look as though an fool. You needless to say do no longer understand the symbolism in the back of his tattoo. first of all, that's no longer a goldfish, it rather is a koi fish. Koi are no longer goldfish, they're carp. Goldfish have been bred from Prussian carp, koi have been bred from simple carp. they're thoroughly diverse species with thoroughly diverse sizes, physique shapes, and hues. they're so diverse that even with the actuality that they might interbreed, they produce sterile offspring. That being suggested, koi carry a good style of symbolism for Asian way of existence. there are fairly some meanings to this symbolism: a million. The koi is an emblem of love and friendship in Japan. 2. Koi frequently characterize non-conformity. Koi are so stable they might swim upstream, which as symbolism might properly be interpreted as "going against the pass." 3. for an identical reason, koi are symbols of endurance interior the face of adversity. It symbolizes overcoming stumbling blocks once you're deprived. It sounds to me like your son positioned so plenty greater theory into this tattoo than you provide him credit for. you're taking it as a private insult to you, and probably that's the way it could be taken. It looks an undesirable lot like your son is making an attempt to tell you some thing. i think of you are able to confront him approximately it, yet on condition which you're arranged to pay attention what he rather thinks approximately your controlling habit.

So does that mean if he needs to move back in your house for some reason or another when he's in his 20's, 30's or even 40's you wouldn't allow him to because of a Tat? My kids understand that until they turn 18 they follow my rules - no tats or body piercings other than the ear (not even that if your male). And I have many tat's & got the first one when I was 12. ** How long did you stand there looking? You managed to remember what it said obviously **

I don't understand these parents that make a big deal about tattoos. I don't have one myself, but what's the big deal? Really? It shows personallity....not necessarily a bad thing. Just because somebody has a tattoo, doesn't make them some sort of devil worshipper...

You have more important things to worry about than your son disobeying you and getting a tattoo.

Your son is also a Nazi.
