My kitten (5 mo.), a himalayian persian, won't use the litterbox; instead he uses the newspaper like my dog. He scratches and paws at it like it's kitty litter, yet for some reason he won't ever use the real litter box... Is there anything I can do to get him to use the litter box? Thanks.

Mix a little bit of soil with the litter,I've done this before and it worked. If he starts using his box then gradually take away some of the dirt, till it's all litter. Good Luck!

He's following the dog's example, and the dog isn't in trouble if he uses the paper, so to the cat logic is use the paper. Start by putting newspaper in the litter box, and slowly add in kitty litter. As he starts to use the litter box More often, lessen the amount of paper and increase the amount of kitty litter, but don't be surprised if the dog decides he should use the litter box too if he can't get outside. Was absolutely hysterical when my roommates dog was doing it, she had been trained to use the bathtub, but thought we ended up with a litter muncher, but there she was scrunched up in the litter box using it, never trained her to, she just did it. But anyway, whole other topic, start w/ just newspaper in the box and see if that helps. Good Luck!

Well try putting him in the litter box every so often, after awhile he should get the hint. Make sure there's no newspaper around though. If he doens't like that than try something similar to litter like dirt from a garden. Hopefully he'll get the connection.

What you need to do is take the kitten down to the litter box about every 5 minutes show him where it is if you do that enough he will eventually learn where the litter box is and use it

My sister has this same breed of cat. Her problem was the kitty litter she was using. It also caused the poor thing to have kidney infections. Don't use the cheapest brand try the kind with the crystals in it. Sorry can't remember the name. Also give the kitty bottled water instead of tap water. Then again maybe you forgot to tell him he was a cat. I had that problem with my dog Gracie. She thought she was human.

The kitty needs a bit of persuasion. After you feed him, place him gently in the box and praise him. If you catch him scratching at the paper, pick him up and put him in the box. He'll get the message quickly.

they actually have litter that is rolled up newspaper balls....try some of that and see what happens
