Bloodhounds are part of the working group..This means they need alot of exercise and stimulation if they are not doing what they were bred to do..Which is following scents. They have an utterly amazing sense of smell, which can lead to trouble in certain situations..As in, they become very tempted to follow their nose, no matter what. The ones I have had experience with have been very sweet, personable dogs with an endless supply of energy. Be prepared to walk or run this dog every day..Lots of playing..Lots of patience..Although they are highly intelligent...Heres a few websites with info for you: http://www.bloodhounds.org/page31/introletter.html

I do not believe in taking a dog out of the environment it was bred and meant to live in. A Bloodhound is a tracking dog and you can't and shouldn't attempt breeding that out of them.I don't think a Border Collie should be a pet either. If you don' t allow these dogs to do their job they become very frustrated and then they certainly are not good house pets. You can keep them in the house and love them. BUT they have to do their job during the day. I feel the same about all the hunting dogs. They don't want to lay on the couch and watch TV with you. They want the run and chasing.

I think that is why the Jack Russell is so hyper and crazy. They were not meant to stay inside the house. They need to run/chase about 900 miles a day.

If everyone researched the kind of dog that would compliment their lifestyle there would not be so many unwanted dogs. It is so simple and yet, it doesn't seem like many people do it. It is just common sense. Get a dog that likes to do the same things you do.

Bloodhounds are easy going, laid-back dogs who love kids, get along well with other dogs and make great companions. They do however have a relatively short life span (9 - 11 years is average), they have those jowls that can fling saliva all around your house, and once they're on a scent, they are tenacious, so not the best breed to have off leash.

But if you're wondering about them as a family dog - they are great!

I would guess that they make excellent pets providing you exercise them a lot. Acreage or a large fenced yard would be ideal, along with weekly (at least) trips to a large dog park, beach, etc.

I have a coonhound mix and he is delightful! And contrary to what another person said, he just adores laying on my couch watching tv with me, lol!! (He also goes to the dog park 3 times a week ... it has a 5k dog walk in it).

I don't know about bloodhounds, but coonhounds, especially redbones, make excellent pets.

They make great pets.

They do howl loud.

They also can jump a 6 foot fence to my surprise.

They will need long walks or frequent trips to the dog park.

They make the most god-awful wailing noises you've ever heard, but besides that they're you're typical big dog. If you're looking for certain personality traits I suggest you dont get a puppy.
