Please help me. My roomate adopted two dogs from the pound one max (skipperkey ,mix) and Tucker (a rat terrior) well tucker hates jake (my roomate) and loves me (he is signing him over to me) anyway, he keeps running out the front door and we have to find him he always comes to me then jake takes him and spanks him. my question is How do we stop him from bolting out the door? this has happend at least 4 times now and 2 times he came home and 2 times we had to find him b/c he left when we were on the way to petsmart (actually right as we opened the car door). I am not sure if any of this makes sense but please help me stop tucker from bolting everytime the door opens he is a very sweet, smart dog other than that!
btw we have tried a kennel, spanking, and yelling NO everytime he even comes close to the front door.

Now you know why he was in animal control.
Every time he makes it out the door he gets reinforced for it by having a fun run and a game of chase. You need to stop the reinforcement.
For the short term, make him drag his 6 ' leash around the house when he is inside. When he makes a dash for the door, stomp on the end of the leash so you can't get past you. Then get him back inside and REWARD HIM for coming in.
Part two is teach him sit and stay. That takes a little work and and a lot of reinforcement.
Never punish him for coming back. You want him to come back. Why would you punish him for this?
Another trick. When he runs away, get his attention, then run the opposite way. see if he doesn't follow you. Then just simply run home....

Have someone stand outside the front door, open it so Tucker can bolt, when he does the person outside should squirt him with something like cold water (with a spray bottle in his face). He should hate it enough to stop. Spanking does not work, he may not connect it with his behavior.

1. Take it to the Vet for medication to get rid of the cough.
2. Crating the dog is a good idea but the crate should not be used as punishment - just a place to sleep or be confined while nobody is home.
3. SPANKING the dog is VERY cruel and if somebody watches you hitting your dog, they could report you.

First thing you need to do is get this dog into obedience training. He will learn to sit and stay / come (among others) then you can practice this by using the front door. I don't open up my back door till all of my dogs are sitting, then one by one I tell them to go outside...while the others sit and wait for their name to be called.

leash the dog, bring the dog back and close the door everytime it bolts out. give the command or signal to get out of the door, then lead the dog out. repeat. open the door, if the dog bolts, hold the leash and close the door before it can get out. repeat.... repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat... and you'll build the behavior - no command, stay indoors.

I have never answered a question in this way before. My opinion of your problem is this; I think you should not have any animals. It doesn't sound like you or your roommate have any idea of what you are doing or how to do it. You NEVER hit a dog or a child. You are not consistant. I don't think either of you can be and I don't know why.........Find good homes for both of the dogs and give it up.

Abusing your dog will get you nowhere. Try training him.

spanking isnt going to do anything. if he's going to be like that, you're going to have to crate him when you leave
