Sort of like what a nurse is to a doctor.... support staff.
"A cleric ranking just below a priest in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and Roman Catholic churches". There were (& still are) deacons at the Catholic church I used to attend. They sort of did all the little things for the priest like open his Bible or carry things TO him or carry stuff FOR him. Once in a while they also did the "big talk" after the reading of the gospel... that's when one of the priestly or deaony types would walk around in front of the congregation and explain what the gospel reading we'd just heard really MEANS to us.
Oh, and he can get married.

A deacon is a man that the local church elects to serve the people in the church. Here is a deacon qualifications: 1 Timothy 3: 8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 1 Timothy 3: 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 1 Timothy 3: 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 1 Timothy 3: 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 1 Timothy 3: 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 1 Timothy 3: 13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

A deacon is a serving minister in the church. Deacons take care of the everyday business that Pastors do not have time for. In a very large church and in mega churches deacons are very important. A good board of deacons is a blessing to a Pastor. A lazy board of deacons is nothing short of a board of demons. Becoming a deacon is usually the first step toward full ordination in the church.

In the Mormon church a deacon is the first step in the priesthood and is typically given to worthy 12 year old young men, but is also given to worthy male converts. The duties of a deacon are as follows:
A deacon follows counsel, sets a good example, and may (1) pass the sacrament, (2) collect fast offerings, (3) care for the poor and needy, (4) be a standing minister appointed to "watch over the church" (D&C 84:111), (5) assist the bishopric, (6) serve as a messenger, (7) participate in quorum instruction, (8) serve in quorum leadership positions, (9) fellowship quorum members and other young men, (10) be baptized and confirmed for the dead, (11) speak in meetings, (12) share the gospel, (13) bear testimony, and (14) care for the meetinghouse and grounds.
I also have family in the Church of Christ church. My Grandfather was a Deacon in that church and they served in a quorum as well. In that church, he helped take care of the meetinghouse and grounds, was considered someone very strong in faith, and gospel knowledge and was asked to speak in meetings, and unless a quorum was there they (the congregation) could not take communion/sacrament.

It is an officer of the church in charge of money and other material concerns of the congregation. Originally it was concerned with feeding the widows of the first-century church.
In the Catholic and Episcopal churches, it is the order just below that of priest. Often it is a kind of apprenticeship or internship for the priesthood, though the Catholics allow married ministers to become perpetual deacons.

Well, a deacon is a person of devout faith that has been chosen by the church leader to help out around the church. Sort of like the " Teacher's Aid " in high school, but for a church. I hope this helps.

A deacon is a respected member of the Catholic Church who is usually involved with the church services. However, unlike the priests in the church, the deacon is allowed to marry.
The deacon is also involved with such activities as organizing church activities and writing the church newsletter.

In Catholicism, a deacon is a man who preaches but does not consecrate the host. A deacon is usually a married man. Someone of faith who does not join the priesthood but has a lot to offer the faith. Consecration is reserved for those who are, well, consecrated, that is reserved for God themselves.

There is a scriptural difference between and elder, (or overseer) and a deacon. Elders are what we today would call pastors, while deacons, were in charge of finances, and support of the elder[s].
Hope this helps!
