People that succeed believe in themselves. In the long run it is not the most intelligent or the most qualified person that succeeds, it is the one who perserveres.

I think successful people are highly imaginative. They never stop thinking nor give up. They also follow their dreams. People who don't succeed either give up on their dreams and settle into their lives filled with regrets. They let what people think get in their way. Take what advice you want from people and let the rest go out the other ear. Not everyone has good advice. Your first clue should be what kind of life are they living. If you don't like what you see...let it go out the other ear.
The common denominator I think is imagination or lack of.

Hmmm: finished school (at least h.s., preferably more than that nowadays), no kids until they were stable, steered clear of the booze and drugs, inner drive, partially what was modeled in their life--but that is only a smaller piece of the whole puzzle.

Determination - they don't quit until they have what they want
Perserverance - no matter the obtacle, they overcome it
