A cat will often 'adopt' several homes. Mine visit several neighbors, and they get spoiled at each place. Now and again someone will get possessive and keep one in for a few days. I'm sure each household thinks they own the cat(s) that visit them and that's okay as long as we don't all decide to worm them on the same day. Mine also like to jump into cars with open windows. A couple of times folks have come to visit relatives and almost taken a cat back home with them! And then there's the Animal Control Officer. My cats HATE collars, and will find a way to get them off. I've had to go to the Animal Shelter a couple to times to get my cats back. Overall, cats are an independent lot, and will do what suits them on the spur of the moment. Don't feel like you've let the cat down somehow, it's just their nature to roam, wander, and explore - and sometimes they move on.

I think the cat that was living in our boat last year did. She is a beautiful tortise shell and when we took her to the vet before bringing her inside we found that she had been fixed. So she had a home before us but of course we will never know her story. She is the most loving cat and I'm glad she found us.

Cats run away if they don't like where they live, especially if they find something better. They also runaway when their time is near to die.
