Here's what I thought. That if you're going to study somewhere and may not find permanent housing immediately, then youth hostels sound like a good alternative, as they're cheap and accept nightly stays. Has anyone tried it while studying?

You can read hostel reviews at http://www.hosteltimes.com

If you find it fit you can book there as well.

All hostels are different just like all Hotels are different. Only way to know unfortunately though, is to actually hear by word of mouth or stay there.

You can find one and call ahead to ask simple things like is their a communal shower/toilet (Gross) is it dormitory style or are their private rooms? Do you have lockers? Is their a curfew?

It is not wise to stay in a dorm style room without lockers... Things WILL be Stolen! and knowing that, isn't really conducive to a good nights rest.

I spent extended periods living & working in hostels while travelling. Whether it will work for you depends on the hostel itself (if you find a good one with enforced rules) and your personality (do you like meeting new peoplw, can you share space with others).
