A guy tells you that you are his type, so he has to be careful around you. He also told you he already has feelings, but then he tells you that anything between the two you is "impossible". How would you start treating him if you liked him back romantically? How would you start treating him if you didn't like him romantically?

Keep in mind he has been a good friend for years also!

The way you treat him shouldn't change at all. The thing is he is probably afraid that if you two get romantically involved with each other, you might loose your friendship. If things do not work out it will be very hard to go back to the way that things were.
Try to tell him that you feel the same way. But if you all decide to get involved like that, you should take it slow and act as though you just met. It will be a drastic change so just take things slow.

The scenario sounds like the guy likes the girl and wants to take the relationship to the next level but doesn't think the girl will go for it. If it were me and I liked the guy, I'd let him know. If I didn't like him in that way, I would agree that it was impossible and treat him the same way I always had.

If I liked him romantically, I'd find out why it's 'impossible', and then make my move from there.

If I didn't like him romantically, I'd treat him the way I've always been treating him, ignore his comments and keep him as a good friend and nothing more.

If he's a good friend I'd probably say,"Yea, I know I'm your type----alive and breathing. You know the fantacies are always better than the real thing and are always there for you til you destroy them with reality. Glad I can be of such good help to a friend and enjoy me in your dreams...but not to much" That way you get your message across but don't hurt his feelings and it makes for better friends too.

He probably has a girlfriend or something and feels tempted to cheat with you. If he says it's impossible for u2 to be together, believe him. Let it ride and don't overstep your boundaries. Let him decide what he wants by giving him space. Don't call or spend time with him. If he can't live without u, he'll let you know.

I would tell him to give me a call when he figures out what he wants. I would then focus on myself and if someone else comes a long in the meantime then it's his loss. Life too short to play childish games.

If i liked him romantically and he told me that then i would be upset and i would probably loose intrest in him altogether, because he is waisting my life when there are better things to do. If i didn't like him romatically then i would just laugh it off and move on. So my advice to you is, if your in this situation then move on because he is trying to make you chase him and girls aren't chasers. ;)

Tell him how you feel. I take it that "impossible" means that he doesn't want to loose your friendship if it doesn't work out.
