What is 'Theta'?

Question

Besides being the 8th letter in the Greek alphbet. What is Theta and beside Scientology related, how is it conected to 'Thetan?' I can only seem to find Scientology references and when I looked it up on dictionary.com there was no definition. It asked me "Did you mean 'the tan?' " If someone could help me with this, that would be great because I'm running out of places to look.

I'm looking for something outside of Scientology. Im trying to find Thetan outside of LRH, if possible.

"Thetan" and "Theta" are nouns that were "coined" by L Ron Hubbard.
As a result of his research into the human spirit or soul he made specific discoveries as to it's nature and potential. The existing
words Spirit/Soul had too many confused definitions or concepts associated with them, so he created a new word that could be more exactly defined to communicate what he had discovered.
It is taken from the Greek letter theta, and is the mathmatical symbol used in Scientology to indicate the source of life and life itself.
"Theta" is simply a more general form of the same noun, Thetan. A "Thetan" is the individual.

Here are some definitions of the words "theta" and "thetan" from the "Dianetics and ScientologyTechnical Dictionary" which is the only place I know where you will find it defined along with other words in Scientology and Dianetics which describe other specific mental and spiritual phenomena discovered, that needed exact definitions that had not existed in the current english language.

THETA :
1. theta is thought, life force, elan vital, the spirit, the soul, or any other of the numerous definitions it has had for some thousands of years.
2. the energy perculiar to life which acts upon material in the physical universe and animates it, mobilizes it and changes it.
It is susceptible to alteration in character or vibration, at which time it becomes enturbulated theta, or "entheta"
3. an energy of its own universe analogous to energy in the physical universe but only occasionally paralleling electromagnetic-gravitic laws.
4. The three primary components of theta are, Affinity, Reality and Communication.
5. Reason, serenity, stability, happiness, positive emotion. persistence, and other factors which man ordinarily considers desirable.
6. It just happens to be an exterior thing to this universe... so you couldn't talk about it in this universe's terms.

THETAN:
1. The living unit that is the individual. The awareness of awareness unit which has all potentialities but no mass, no wave-length , no energy, no time or location in space except by consideration or postulate. The spirit is not a thing. It is the creator of things.
2. The being who is the individual and who handles and occupies the body.
3. The name given to the life source. It is the individual, the being, the personality, the knowingness of the human being.

I found the words in a web site involving "Matrix (in)equalities for Linear Stochastic Systems" so I stopped looking. Like you, I got a lot of scientology, which is real hippy bull*** rubbish, so I wouldn't worry about it.
