the file format is windows media (TM) video file. well, this is my friends pc. This problem starts right after he reformatted his disk. Does this has anything to do with the files?

You can either download and install K-Lite Code pack from http://download.betanews.com/download/1094057842-3/klcodec277f.exe or VLC Media Player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

K-Lite codec enables practically any media player on your PC to play any kind of media file, but it requires the installation (automated) of a lot of system components.

VLC on the other hand is non-intrusive and bundles support for a lof codecs in itself.

Could be a codec problem, or it could be a licensing issue. Windows media files tend to be a little flaky if you bought the files and did not back up the licensing. Go to the Microsoft website and download the codec pack for Media player. If that does not help he may have to go to the site where he got the videos and redownload the licensing.

go to www.videolan.org and get the player there is the best...no codecs needed.
