I have found that the people who have an axe to grind with the police, are the ones always getting in trouble. They go out and do things that are against the law, and they like it, only when they get caught, they sputter. Simply, if you obey the law, you will not have a problem with the police. I'm 40, have never seen a jail cell, and my record is squeeky clean. Wanna know why that is? Because when I left high school, I GREW up!

There's no such thing as a stupid question, and in fact, yours raises a lot of very valid points. It is true that those who complain are often guilty; however, unless one is perfect and / or never leaves the house, one may have occasion to come in contact with the police whether guilty of a crime or not. Now, have you ever perhaps parked your car near a fire hydrant and put the flashers on in order to run to a corner mailbox and drop in a letter and run right back and move the car? And before you can get to the mailbox, a police officer drives up and condescendingly and rudely tells you to move your car right now and makes you feel 2 feet high etc. etc.? Well, I have, and I bit my tongue and moved my car and didn't mail the letter until later. But - suppose I had smarted off to the officer - insisted on mailing the letter - got a ticket, etc. etc. and perhaps was arrested for disorderly conduct -- well - the officer was rude and even though I shouldn't have smarted off, I had a right to express my opinion of his snotty attitude - well - that is just how people come to complain about the police even though they may be guilty of the crime they are arrested for. In other words, the police can be rude and even worse to those who are simply going about the business of life. I know a kid who had a pet rabbit and was at a concert - the undercover officer threw the kid against a store window because he didn't like the kid throwing the rabbit up in the air - well, maybe the officer was correct in arresting the kid - but didn't need to throw the kid against the window. In other words, life can get messy - even law-abiding citizens can get into tussels with the police that leave them wondering just how fair the police are - and I am sure criminals have the same experience. That's a simplistic answer to your question but it might explain a bit the phemonenon you describe. By the way, with the Patriot Act and the new legislation allowing the FBI to interrogate a person just for - let's say, writing a strongly worded letter to the local mayor - well, let's just say the police have a lot more room now to rough up those who may just be a bit different or outspoken than the average Joe or Jill.

That's not true. Lots of people have been pulled over or harrassed by cops. Not all of them have done anything.
There's always going to be this problem with police; they're human too, and they get called into high-stress situations every day, and they could definitely lose their lives just doing highway patrol. So they're stressed out and not thinking 100% clearly all the time, and they see a lot of nasty people and start thinking people are nasty. And their job is fairly violent and doesn't require a lot of thinking, so you're going to see a higher percentage of thugs than, say, in accounting jobs or management jobs.
I totally respect good policepeople for doing a job that's nasty and hard and dirty and gets them looked down on. But the police do need to be watched very carefully, because they have power and we need to make sure they don't abuse it at all. It's very easy to start getting a police state, and very hard to go back to democracy once that's happened. Power corrupts.

I agree with you. Those that dont break the law dont have to worry about police, therefore dont complain because they arent worried about getting caught doing something, and I for one am glad that in my area they really keep an eye on the community and stuff. I have also lived in places where they were ***holes. Bored at night pulling people over for no reason. That i dont agree with but i would much rather be pulled over for no reason and let go, than to have cops around that didnt care about protecting the community.

Hehe...
I complain, and have never been arrested or found guilty of a crime. Such statement is a lame excuse that serves to empower the rotten apples in the police.
I did file a grievance for civil rights violations and show of force, however. How did I get a lousy cop off me? I told him in his face that he had no right to pin me down and threaten to arrest me. When I said the word "grievance" and wrote his name, he filled the back of his underwear.
So why am I angry at cops? Oh, because I learned then that unless you taped the incident, your sworn statement is dismissed. Internal Affairs will do anything to avoid giving the chief a headache, and the Mayor a lawsuit.
SO, LEARN YOUR RIGHTS, PEOPLE!
Learn what the cops can, and can't do. Study your civil rights, read the cops policies procedures manuals. Take away their powers to violate *your* rights, because you'll think they can threaten to arrest you just to shut you up or control you..

I was arrested, after an illegal search, and I still respect the police. In fact I am a perfect example of why these people's thinking is flawed.
To make a long story short, two cops saw me get out of my car. They said they thought I was stealing it. While one cop talked to me, the other reached in my open window, opened my glovebox, and found a bag of pot.
This WAS an illegal search, and i WOULD have been found not guilty in a court of law, but was I INNOCENT? No.
The problem is, there are alot of poeple who get wrongfully arrested like I did, but most of them are guilty of some crime. I believe it is fairly rare that someone who is truely innocent gets arrested.

Most of those people have a nasty chip on their shoulder and bear a big huge grudge. Who do they take it out on? Authority figures. Who are the most well know of authority figures? The police.

More than haft of time, police with uniforms would be completly sober. But if they have no uniforms, many times they are not sober.
In addition, it would depands on who you are or maybe their personality.....

that's a pretty stupid question.
that's like saying "why is it only people with back problems that complain of back pain?" if you had nothing to do with the cops, why would you complain?
