There are many high quality dog foods available these days..I used to feed Nutro Chicken/Rice...My pups grew great, and, as my breed is long-coated, they had gorgeous coats in no time...
However, their teeth were always stained..I never knew why, but they seemed to need constant cleaning, to be ready to show..

So, I switched to Eukenuba, and they had better teeth, and nice coats..but bowels were always loose...

I fed Abady's for 2 litters, and liked what it did for the pups..but it stank..and was too un-handy....

I fed Purina Pro Plan when it came out..Pups did well..no complaints...

However, my supplier recommended Canidae 21/2 years ago..WOW! I never knew that my oldsters could be so rejuvenated! Suddenly they were putting on gorgeous coats, and acting as puppies..full of play..dancing as we walked...It just blew me away...
Then I took a 10 year old to have a cyst removed, and the vet came out amazed at her blood-work..he said that it was that expected in a 4-5 year old...He also said that he always cleans teeth while they are 'under', but that her teeth were absolutely clean..

I took another in to be spayed, at 7 years old, and the vet was amazed at how white and clean her teeth were..and then when he took out stitches..commented that she healed so fast that the incision was already hard to see...

All my dogs have just thrived on Canidae, and I would sure recommend it..It is made from all human grade ingredients, and natural preservatives..
there are other foods that are likely as good..but, as Canidae is easy to find, and they are doing so well, I wouldn't want to switch..
Other great dog foods that you can find most places, are Wellness, Innova, Solid Gold, Wysong, Natural Balance,

this is a very touchy subject for some owners. I can tell you, that Jason and Bonsylar listed the overall best foods on the market. THis also means they are the most expensive also. I've seen people get into arguements over this subject so many times taht its no longer funny. As listed above, Canidae, Buffalo, Royal Canin and Natural Balance are amongst the best brands adn foods on the market. However, i will tell you that it depends on you what you want to feed them. Some people will try and tell you that you HAVE to give them something like this or your a terrible owner. I will tell you from experience, when i was younger and before all the food companies started worrying and competeing with eachother, 20-30 years ago, i used to feed my dogs Alpo. Over the years, i learned that other foods were better. For about 5 years or so, i fed only IAMS. This is when they ahd better quality food than they do now. In the past 2-3 years, i switched my dogs to either Royal Canin or Natural Balance. You can see the difference in quality just by looking at the dogs but it isn't anything as drastic as some owners will tell you. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. At the low end are Alpo/Pedigree/Kibbles n Bits.... in the middle are IAMS/Eukanuba/Science Diet..... at the high end are Natural Balance/Canidae/Royal Canine/Wellness. I suggest that you only stick to medium and high end. The low price foods are nowhere near as healthy as they used to be 20 years ago.

My husband works for a pet product distributor and the best foods out there are : Eagle Pack, Natures Variet, Canidae. Don't use Iams or Eukanuba cuz they are on the "black list" which means they are no good. Purina is also on the "black list". you can buy the best foods at pet stores that sell specialty foods. No, Iams is not the best. it is if you want your animal eating other animals. it is a proven fact. Nuto is also really good and so is innova Some animals don't like the regular Eagle Pack, so try the hollistic. That's all my cats and dog eat.

Chetco's answer is the best. "Breeder since 1968" A true breeder is serious about nutrition. However, buying some of the foods listed in your answer can get expensive, so its really up to you. I feed Nutro Natural High Energy for my active Boxer, but occasionally trying something new, doesn't hurt. Ask these questions, is your dog over weight, under weight, active or a slug, bad or good teeth. Does he/she have firm stool or diahhrea? You'll figure it out, but what ever you do dont feed your dog some cheap fancy colored dog food from wal mart!

Innova
California Natural
Artemis
Wellness
Canidae
Look them up, they all have websites.
Never feed Iams, Purina, or Science Diet. They are all but poison to dogs. Read "Foods Pets Die For" by Ann N. Martin if you don't believe me. You will be shocked and amazed.
Cheers.

Science diet from hill's pet nutrition.
Even there a many high quality products, such as ProPlan Purina, Royal Canin and Eukanuba.
I have been feeding my dog with all this products, and I observed that the best choice was science diet, is perfectly balance, she has a beautiful skin, and also one day I had to feed her with prescription diet, also from hill's and help so much for her condition.

Innova and their line of EVO (the evolutionary diet for dogs, no grains whatsoever) it's very close to what people feed when they do the raw or BARF diet, extremely high quality great dog food.

Innova , Royal Cannin, Authorty, Blue Buffalo, Canidae . But Innova is just amazing I noticed a change in the fur of coat in my 2 rottweilers, in 1 week. Innova has no fillers at all its just awsome. But its a bit pricey.
