Is it me or are bank notes made out of paper? Therefore in effect money does actually grow on trees in a sense! Unfortunately not quite in the spendable sense!

It does. Think about it:
Anything that grows on a tree, for example fruits, timber, seeds, can be sold for money.
Dollar bills are made of linen and cotton, both of which come from plants.

because paper money would get soggy and ruined in the rain/snow and blown away in the wind and coins would be too heavy for the tree to hold! not to mention all th elittle brats that would steal it from your garden!!!
