I'm raising my hand! Kids come out of High School knowing almost nothing nowadays! I blame the gov't and its lack of funding, but also it's insane "Educational Reform" and sorry if this insults some, the idea of "inclusion". It just taxes teachers who are already under trained and overtaxes (what with re-certification and all the stupid courses they have to take!).

The whole system should go back to how it was in the 1950s and 60's!

Yes it sucks, but that is not the reason.

It sucks because there is ZERO accountability. Allowing parents to choose whichever school their kids go to would fix most everything. Just look at charter and magnet schools that get 10 times better results on 1/10 the budget.

MONEY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SCHOOL SYSTEM SUCKAGE

Yes, it sucks, but not for the reasons you give.

Funding is completely unfair, being based on how rich your parents are.

But the deeper problem is in what actually goes on in classrooms. One answer above expressed the line of thinking behind the problem, the idea that it is up to the teacher to fill each head with knowledge.

Students' minds are not passive receptacles, but active, dynamic, thinking things, that crave being able to think, to comprehend, to make sense of the world around them.

That is what students should spend their time in class doing: thinking. They should be continually using what they already know and what they are currently learning to Make Sense of the world, and continually re-evaluating what they think.

You can't put understanding into another person's head; they have to build their own understanding for themselves.

The reason the same material has to be repeated year after year is because students aren't called on to understand it, to integrate it into their thinking, to USE what they learn.

Far from reform being the problem, the problem is reform doesn't go far enough.

An approach (such as the current reform movement in math) that requires students to think their way through what they learn and apply it to the real world needs to be implemented in all subjects at all levels.

don't EVEN get me started on education, I can go on for hours

grumble, grumble ... snort ... fume

why do people have to bash the education system all the time?? I have a 5 yr old whom just started kindergarten this year. I happen to have gone to the same elementary school he is going to. I think this school is an exc. school. They dont have fights, the teachers teach and everyone is friendly. This by far is the safest school ive seen. To prove this..about a month ago..there was a guy who was driving around to the play ground and asking the kids to help find him cat, and offering candy. There and then the teachers gave a very good description of the van, and the man. He did this a total of 2 times, and he also did this in a near by town and city. They then tought the kids about stranger safty and sent out a bulletin about this guy. The town police are looking for him and are patroling the school. These teachers would risk thier lives for these kids..no matter what. Our whole district is good. WE have a middle school that is great...good ratings, and all. The high school is a kinda typical..i dont like it. I graduated almost 10 yrs ago and when I was there, there was alot of fights, alot of teacher issues, like fireing, and accusations (sp)..and the kids are brats. All in all..its an ok school.

Yes, we do waste lots of time. But that is because we are trying to teach a large and diverse group! It takes much repetition and many different teaching methods to make sure everyone "gets it". My daughter complains that her teachers are moving too slowly even in advanced classes, but there are other students in the same classes who feel totally lost. Imagine one teacher trying to get through to 100 different personalities at once. Also, sadly but realistically, there is the human element. Teachers may be passionate about their jobs, but there are inevitably some days when they just don't feel like being there. They are human beings and they have ups and downs just like you. They go home and cook dinner and clean up dog poop and worry about bills just like the rest of us.

No, I am currently working on my master's of Education. English is very import, especially in the age we live in. Communication electronically is increasing everyday. Without proper instruction miscommunication occurs. Our written word is the first impression that we leave. Writting is an art and it takes years of practice to perfect these skills. If you are unhappy with the educational system, further your education and take action to change it.
