Most people use candies as the favors. I have known some to use cd's, bookmarks, bubbles, it all really depended on the people. Some even donate money to other causes that they believe in. Most people dont keep favors, expecially if they have any mention of the bride and groom on it.
I am giving away a few different things. For the kids (there is only a few coming), in addition to having a "kids only" table where they can draw on the tablecloth (paper), I am giving each child a goodie bag with treats, coloring book, crayons and a small toy. For my other guests, we have made up bookmarks and clear box with a candle in it. It will be tied with 2 ribbons (the same colors as my wedding).

I'm having 3 kind of wedding favor because not everybody is suitable for everything. (examples: wine as wedding favor is not suitable for kids or if you are giving wine opener as favor there is no point giving 4 wine opener to a family of 4.) For the 3 favor I have is customize playing card for the guys, wine opener and stopper for the gals and japanese little dessert for the kids & elderly. So everybody get a little something different.

We had little square magnets with our first names and the date of the wedding on it. In the background was a picture of a Kim Anderson photo (you know, the black and white pictures of the little kids dressed up--mine were in wedding attire).
I used special removable glue to attach the magnets to card stock, and on the card stock I had a little poem on it.
They were inexpensive and it's something that people can actually use. I go to my friends and familys' houses all the time and still see them, even after three years!
Here are some examples of favor sayings:

I went to the dollar store and bought crystal pineapples. We were having a hawaiian (husband's side) and Filippino (my side) themed wedding. We said that the pineapple is a symbol of hospatility, and then we said Thank you, Salamat (tagalog) and Mahalo (hawaiian) I spent $297 for 250 favors, which included the ribbon, boxes and thank you tags.

Instead of a favor why don't you donate the money to an organization that you and your soon to be hubby. Very few people like favors anymore. You could just give a card saying in lieu of favors you donated the money to__________.

We got married at a winery so...
We found bottles of bubbles shaped like wine bottles, and included them on the tables with the name place settings. We had our guest place setting in wallet size silver frames. We told everyone to make sure and take the little frames home, and in the thank you cards we sent a copy of our wedding picture to go in the frame.
For our wedding party:
We got the bridesmaids lots of goodies from Bath and Body works in there favorite scent, and got them jewelery to wear on the big day.
For the groomsmen, we got them beer mugs engraved with there names and favorite sports team logo.
For the ring bearer, we got a watch (he was just starting to tell time)
For the flower girl, we got a sweet jewelery set of costume jewelry and a little purse to match her dress.
For our parents, we later, after the wedding, gave them large framed pictures of our engagement photo and wedding photo.
Good luck and Congrads!

We didn't do wedding favors. We made a donation to a children's cancer foundation instead. I made note of this at the table where they picked up their place cards. It read, " In Leui of favors, we have made a donation to the children's cancer foundation".
It's a great time saver & a great cause!

I didn't do this because of time restraints but I thought this was a cute idea...
At Kinko's they have little magnets that you can buy. They are usually rectangular and in a large quantity. Cheap too! While you're at Kinko's, have pictures of the two of you printed in the size of the magnet and glue them on.
Then, get little organza bags (cheap on ebay) to put them in!

I just went to a wedding where they made a CD with GREAT music on it. It had pictures of the bride and groom on it. Very personal and unique, something I won't throw in the trash as soon as I get home.
