I understand that at rush hour all the lanes are needed, but if the highway is 20 - 30% full and moving 10% faster than the posted speed limit, what would make someone think that it is OK to drive at the speed limit in the left hand lane? Is it ignorance? Do they not know any better? Is it a complete disregard for courtesy? Are they the boss? Why?

Sunshine...let me explain since I don't think you drive yet...The speed limit IS the law, you're right. However, traffic flow is a seperate entity. At times, it is faster just like at times, it is slower than the speed limit. When traffic is moving at a constant 80mph, driving 70mph in the "passing" lane holds up traffic and is downright dangerous. Go 70mph...that's fine and perfectly in tune with the law. Just do it in the right hand lanes, not the passing lanes. When you drive, you will understand.

Where I live, they pass out speeding tickets in ANY lane, whether it be the left OR far right lane, so it's a good idea not to exceed the limit in ANY lane.

And don't give me that "flow of traffic" crap. The cops don't care WHAT the flow of traffic is when they are looking to write somebody up.

I usually drive the speed limit to avoid the stress of worrying about getting a ticket. It makes the drive much more enjoyable and only adds a minute or two. I stay to the right, until I see traffic approaching at an on-ramp. If there's room, I move over to let them in easily. If not, I keep the cruise control on and expect them to adjust their speed to merge into the lane. Often, when I'm in the middle lane, the traffic that entered speeds up and they start passing me on the right. When it's clear, I get back to the right. There are times when the right and middle lane slow down below the speed limit. Then, I move into the left lane. That's when the speed demons get so upset that I'm not facilitating their violation of the law. I just ignore the honks and flashing lights. When I get the chance, I move back over to the right, if the speeders don't start passing me on the right. When they do, I just smile and know that they are the ones getting stressed for no good reason, and wasting gas in the process.

Because they are ignorant have little regard for the law and others. If they are going the speed limit and the right lane is available they have to go into the right lane and allow others to pass. Flash your lights honk your horn, they have to move over, what if there was an emergency. They have to move over. Was it and old person wearing a hat?
Just stay within 10% of the speed limit when you pass -lol

Many are clueless. Some think they're doing everyone a favor by trying to slow everyone down. Some do it to intentionally piss people off. I find it annoying. I find it even more annoying when people do well UNDER the speed limit on a two-lane road at rush hour and due to oncoming traffic it's nearly impossible to pass!

Oh...and I had to share this to...one evening about a month ago on my commute from work to school, I was cruising southbound on 75, doing between 75 and 80 mph (it's 70 mph limit in Michigan)...going with the flow of traffice in the passing lane. Well...wouldn't you know it...the state boys were taking radar in the median...which is fine...but you know how it goes...everyone has to slam on their brakes and do about 10-15 mph UNDER the speed limit (although we know how it goes, by the time you've seen them, they've already seen you) and really if they're going to slam on their brakes that's fine as well. But what really irritated me this time is it was apparently a crappy honda with a manual transmission therefore no brakelights were visible so I nearly rearended this idiot who went from 80 to 60 at the drop of a hat.

They do it to piss off those of us who know how to drive . Speed Limit shmeed limit. When have you ever had a cop write you a ticket for going 9 miles an hour over the speed limit on the highway? It's not worth the hassle for them trust me. If you aren't passing in the passing lane get the heck outta the way!!! Vroom vroom

You are going to get a speeding ticket going with the flow if the flow exceeds the legal limit . After 5 miles over the limit - I am not about to compromise my driving record .

Because it is the law. Why do you slow down when you see a state trooper and you're doing 10% faster than the speed limit.

How about because it's the law. I know nobody cares much for laws in this country anymore.
