On a recent trip to Israel I was stunned by the rudeness of the locals, there I was stood at the Whaling Wall with my harpoon waiting for one to swim past, when I noticed people pointing at me and laughing, now I admit I have a rather large nose but there is no need to ridicule me! Sods!

Where do I begin without insulting the question. First of all, I'm an American living in Israel for 7 years I understand the question because I have also experienced what you call the "rudeness" of Israelis. Yes, in fact what we as Americans perceive as rude, they (Israelis) believe they're being informal.
I don't believe Israelis are innately any more strange than any other people foreign to us in the US. In many ways they can be much warmer than Americans-- although you'd have to live here to understand that. That said, Israelis have always had to fight for everything right down to everyday things that we Americans take for granted.
I find it difficult to believe that Israelis were staring at you and laughing especially those that frequent the whaling wall as they are typically religious and usually go about their business praying, not laughing - they simply don't have time.
It's unfortunate that you had that experience but the core of your question and observation is not that far off base. I think many people might agree that Israelis have a tendency to be what we perceive as rude.. But I learned very fast that when I'm faced with such rudeness, I give them the same treatment and they usually respect this behavior.
Hope this helps...

People in Israel are not like you said. Everyone has it's own culture, I am not sure you want to know what Israeli's say about Americans. You might not like it.

I have known a number of Israelis. Some, as you say, have been not simply rude but overbearingly arrogant. I used to work for an Israeli-owned company and I thought my boss was a great guy until one day I overheard him referring to British people as 'schmuks'. I have also met a number of very pleasant Israelis. At least one of which I would describe as a gentle and kind man.
As they say, it takes all sorts to make a nation.

They indeed have warped minds if they can laugh at a person in that way. However, I wouldn't consider all Israelis to possess such absurd traits.

should have used a catapult mate, their most advanced fishing weapon. they would have understood your intent then.
Unfortunately a harpoon would have looked liked a primitive banjo, hence the ridicule....

That's the culture there...
It's as if they consider themselves to be one gigantic, pushy, squabbling family...and anything goes!
