Soup is the best comfort food, that's probably what you mean by calming. I grew up having home made soup every day, and now that I'm grown I make my own at least once a week. There's nothing better to go home to after a long day of work.

Its just tasty, warm and quick and easy to do. And probably because its something your mum gave you when you felt poorly as a child. The old wives tale that chicken soup is good for a cold is apparently true. There is something in chicken that helps with congestion and boosts your immune system.

Its also probably something to do with it being a liquid. People stand and watch the sea or rivers for hours, so maybe its the liquid movement thing?! Plus, you can't be too animated because you'll fling the soup everywhere, so you have to concentrate so you don't slop it all over yourself!

I do not think it is calming but it does have many good things.
Full of goodness, warming on a cold day, healing they reckon chicken soup good for colds, cheap to buy and with some crusty bread lovely. A good filler in a stew makes it more tasty.A safe starter to a meal, easy to make and also a good old fashioned food.
I think it also is a good comfort food that is not loaded with to many calories.
Reminds me of when I was ill when youn and granny made it for me it felt special so perhaps that is calming in a way.

I think that the calming effect of the soup comes from the inert heat. It is like a heat fix, gives you an instant glow, and you get the gentle release of heat around the body.

I think soup is a WONDERFUL thing and now that cool weather's coming in, I've made chili, corn chowder, potato soup, and I'm still wanting more. Something about it just stirs up a feeling of home, quiet times before the fireplace, and peacefulness. HERE'S TO SOUP!
Oh yes....don't forget Rivel soup!!!

It's because your mum always used to give it to you when.you were poorly. My mother was a great believer in a bowl of home made soup as a remedy for most ills and she was usually right! If no home made was available, Heinz cream of tomato was the next choice.

It's a comforting warm/hot...it's not heavy. And depending on the consistency (cream or broth) it can be quite calming...especially if you're eating it with a nice sandwich or in a nice, warm, comfortable setting.

Quite like drinking tea...tea has that effect.

It's calming because is a homey feeling, if thats a word, its normally something mom or a close family member would fix for you, something that made you literatly feel all warm inside, and just makes you feel good.
