Okay people. I am S'Klallam Cheppewa-Cree.
I am what white america calls "Native American".
If you are truly Indigenous, you are completely. Not "some", "Part", "a little", "half", "1/8".......
If you do not want to be completely, wholly, truly....then don't be at all. Being Native is an honor, and something that you strive to keep alive...
NOT something you say as a conversation starter, or claim because you think your going to get some kind of benefits.
It is true that some were unable to enroll back in the day...
But to those of you who are making a joke of it. It's not right...karma will prevail.

It all depends on how you define "Native American". It used to be that if a person was 1/8th black (an Octaroon) that person was considered Black.
I suggest you forget the 3% crap. Go ask any of your friends - unless they are recent immigrants there will most likely be at least 30-40% of them with some Indian blood in their past - even the Blacks who are "Redbones".
Case in point - I have Narragansett Indian blood (Manhattan and the 24 beads). Once when in LA I formed a band and found that all the members had some Indian blood, mostly Cherokee, Mohawk and Sioux. Not ONE of them claimed to be a "Native American".
Many celebrities have Indian blood, notably Will Rogers, Cher, Crystal Gayle and Johnny Cash.
So maybe those who aren't really legally "Native American" are pushing the definition. Now whether that entitles them to a "get out of jail card", I think the answer is NO.

There were never more than 9 million indians in America. I'm sorry to say if the Europeans didn't come over, Spain surely would have and what they did to the aborigines in Mexico I think is worse.
I understand today there are about 2.5 million now.
I say this, because we still think of reservations in terms of 'quasi' soverign nations, as Tancredo pointed out the other day.
If I was from any tribe I would ask this: If the spp wins and Canada, the USA, and Mexico is one country in 2010, what happens to their soverignty?

Okay I am part native american. What they (the census beaureu) are saying is only 3% are "registered" native americans. To become registered your parents would have to be so and so on and so on. My grandma who is half-native american was unable to do this as her mother died giving birth to her. Most people who are part NA are less than 12% so they claim whatever race is the majority. Take myself for example: My mom is 1/2 afro-cuban, 1/4 black american and 1/4 native american. My dad is Black West Indian from US Virgin Islands (St. Thomas). I just say I'm black american. Because thats who I am ethnically. That is the culture I was raised in.

I was born in Oklahoma in the heart of the Cherokee Nation.90% of Oklahomans lay claim to some Cherokee blood. Its a fact of life people mixed a lot they made children and they mixed with others .Love was everywhere .They may not have enough blood to claim any head rights but they may indeed have some Indian blood.Lots of tribes captured other people and they also interbred, tribe to tribe .My (6)great,great,great,great,great,
great grand mother was full blooded
Cherokee but I don't have enough
Indian blood in me to measure, just like
a lot of others on here .
Since the Cherokee were one of the 5 civilized tribes maybe that's why they are so prolific, they are wonderful people,my husband claims some Indian blood.and he is French Cajun from Louisiana..

I don't think that most people on here claim to be Native American or Indian from the Americas. I know that my family came from Germany but they came here legally. They got on a boat, signed all the necessary papers and learned the language.
They , for a while during WWII lived in a concentrated area as the government was suspisicous of people from Germany and people from Asia.
Everyone here is a mixed mutt. Someone in my family married an Indian woman but it is not known if they had children.

Because many are unaccounted for, they are not Enrolled, like myself I do not have "enough percentage" to enroll. But should I turn my back on my great grandmothers blood and who she was??
My grandfather and his siblings were Never even enrolled. I can imagine that this happens often.
For ~Sun~ Who are you to judge people based on their tribe/heritage?? Should we ignore the Indian in us BECAUSE YOU don't think we have enough percentage??!!?? You are part of the problem when it comes to people like myself, just because we do not have as much percentage as you, does not mean we do Not have Indian ancestry. And many people have Cherokee, where did the Cherokee used to live before the Trail of Tears?? Now where did the Europeans come first?? They didn't come in thru California did they?? No they were living where the Cherokee were and other Eastern Indians. This is why so many of us are able to claim Cherokee. Whether you want to believe it or not, get over yourself. Next time someone tells you they are Cherokee or any other tribe hopefully you will NOT discount them. In doing so you are putting down their heritage.

ok, many of us are decended from Native Americans...IE: have some ancestors that were of whichever tribe. We dont consider ourselves Native American because we are very mixed with other races. Like I am Irish English and Cherokee, but the Irish and English ancestors that I have had out weight the Cherokee in number. So I am white, since I look white. And no, there are no benefits...why does this bother you?

You make claims on here that are not factual or provide where your source of knowledge came from, so why point a finger? But we don't expect you to change or even listen; you're only receptive to answers you agree with. People on the internet claim a lot of things and why worry about it?

little doubt there are people who lie at here and are finished wannabes. some anybody is jerks. even though it is likewise genuine nevertheless that almost each poll and different issues that degree demographics maximum in lots of cases enable human beings to opt for in basic terms one class in regard to race. that's fullyyt ridiculous for the reason that maximum anybody is sure to be a mix of something at the instant. i'm happy to contain my D/Lakota and Choctaw genes alongside with each of something if i'm speaking approximately kin tree and what i'm made out of. yet mutually as I even have that, who i become born become nevertheless in basic terms a woman that's quite often white and the international will detect me that way no count if i like it or not. So as quickly as I could desire to %. that ONE class, i can not lie and that i could desire to opt for what that international perceives me as. some human beings nevertheless do not think of and in basic terms %. (or communicate at here as) what they opt for to be perceived as, not how they are quite seen. i'm optimistic there are diverse people who do have it, yet that proportion could account for in simple terms human beings that have been actual surveyed and had community history adequate that they could opt for that class. in my opinion i think of actually the % is larger then 3 for the reason that many human beings are not getting polled. it ought to in basic terms be from a count form consistent with some "center usa" factors that have a low community proportion and not inevitably the genuine % of the rustic's inhabitants.
