Ok, its not an emergency but I bought a big bunch of green bananas at Costco over a week ago. I thought they'd ripen quickly if I put them in a big paper bag for a few days. They were still green. I tried putting them in the fridge for a couple of days....nothing! I decided to just leave them on the counter and they still have not ripened. At all! What can I do? Its so weird I'm almost ready to throw them away. Its not normal....is it? Thanks!

Description & storage
Long thick-skinned edible fruit that is yellow when ripe.
Keep bananas on a fruit dish in the living room at room temperature. If you want the bananas to ripen faster place the bowl in the sun. Like other tropical fruits and tomatoes and bell peppers, never store bananas in the refrigerator. Below 8 degrees Celsius the fruit will decay from the inside. These fruits will not ripen but will turn black in the refrigerator.

The easiest way is to, as each bunch of bananas progresses further towards black, freeze them in a plastic bag, adding more with each bunch, until you have enough for bread. If you don’t have enough in the freezer, or you're starting from scratch, the fastest way is to put the bananas in a paper bag on the countertop with an apple. Why? Apples emit ethylene gases, which cause certain fruits (like pears and bananas) to ripen faster. Starting with green bananas, paper-bagging them should give you ripe bananas in a day and perfect bread-ready bananas in a day and a half.

Well, you could just wrap it in a newspaper or brown paper or bag and place it in the oven. Just warm the oven a teeny weeny bit after every few hours. Your bananas should be ripe soon. I normally buy the slightly green ones from Costco as they last longer for me and do not go bad.

NEVER put bananas in the fridge unless it is the raw ones for cooking. The cool temperatures delay the ripening process and the bananas could end up turning black.

Already got the paper bag, throw an apple in there with the bananas, it somehow adds oxidization, works great for avocados too. Should take about 2 days to ripen bananas.

Putting them in the fridge will slow the process
paper bag was good, however if they haven't ripened yet, it means they were too green to begin with.
Have you tried one though? sometimes even though they are too green, the fruit will be ok, but the skin still green.

I always buy my bananas alittle green as I like them to taste "fresh" not ripe. I've bought them too green before and had the same issue.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

I did the exact same thing - bought the green bananas, as usual, waiting for them to get yellow and ripe and nothing happened. It freaked me out a bit! lol I mean, it happens EVERY time but not this time! I finally figured out that they were plantains and not bananas. I have no idea how I got a hold of them instead of bananas but they were never going to turn yellow so I gave them to someone who knew what to do with them.
Maybe this happened to you, too? I even got these at Costco!
Good luck figuring out the mystery of the green bananas!
