In Hinduism, Lakshmi or Laxmi (Sanskrit: लक्ष्मी lakṣmī) is the goddess of wealth, light, wisdom and fortune, as well as (secondarily) luck, beauty and fertility. Representations of Lakshmi (or Shri) are found in Jain and Buddhist monuments, in addition to Hindu temples.
In Puranic Hinduism Lakshmi is the Mother of the Universe and Vishnu's Shakti. Lakshmi is consort to Vishnu, and also married his incarnations Rama (in her incarnation as Sita), Krishna (as Rukmini) and Venkateshwara (as Alamelu).

Hindu Mythology !!! When did Hindu Religion Become Myth?
According to Vedic Literatures, wealth is a general Term. It’s only one of the opulence. The opulence or Fortune is called as "Sri" or "Laksmi". Hence the Benedictory of Such opulence is generally called Laksmi.
In Bhagavad Gita, conclusion, Sanjaya mentioned that
"Wherever there is Krishna, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality." (BG 18.78)
Hence the devotee who have surrendered their whole self in Loving service of the Supreme Lord and exalted in Devotion, gets the position of being the wife of the Supreme personality of Godhead and they are generally called Laksmi or Goddess of Fortune.
One of the evidence of this is in Brahma Samhita 5.29 where Lord Brahma says -
"I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, the first progenitor who is tending the cows, yielding all desire, in abodes built with spiritual gems, surrounded by millions of purpose trees, always served with great reverence and affection by hundreds of thousands of laksmis or gopis"
