It's the gel and applicator type.
Question is, is the gel supposed to be so thick? It's really goopy, like soft wax. Makes the applicator a joke to use. I'm thinkin perhaps the kit is expired.
Anyone else have an experience like this? Thanks for your answers!

Yes, it is suposed to be thick. This helps it to adhere to the teeth and prevents it from being washed away by the saliva in your mouth. This "thickness" keeps it from being too runny and getting all over your gum tissue. It is possible to get a small chemical burn on your gums if this happens. When applying it on your teeth, be sure to keep it off of your gums! Hope this is helpful!

When i used it it was the same way. I think it's so thick so that it will stay on your teeth throughout the evening.

Note: If you experience any sensitivity with it, pick up some sensodyne toothpaste. That should help, the best way to use it is to brush your teeth as usual, then with a clean finger dab the sensodyne toothpaste where you are experiencing sensitivity. Let it sit for about 5 minutes and spit but don't rinse.

Hope this helps and good luck!

After reading the product website, it seems the gel is supposed to be thick -- thick enough to "set" on the teeth and be felt there overnight and the next morning until you brush or wipe it away.
If this doesn't help you, then click the site above and ask their customer service department directly.
