very deep red,dry,looks like not much skin is left.

Could be a number of things including excema...don't delay any longer, he needs to be seen by a doctor...can't imagine the pain he is in right now. If infection sets in things will only get worse.

Doctor...today!

It sounds like dyshidrosis. I have that as well and have for the last year or so. You need to take him to the dr, but some things that I have found to be helping a bit are to put some ointment on them at night and then wear cotton gloves. I used cortizone ointment but that may not be the best for a child. You may want to try regular vaseline and see if that helps at all.

Sounds like he could be allergic to soap or anything else that he is touching or using.
This is called contact dermatitis.
See a Dr soon so that you can get this problem corrected and under control.
