I hope you mean 'fall' and not 'thrown', because if the latter you are making a lot of potential enemies on this website.

But in case your question was serious, a cat can often survive (though injured) from very high drops because the average cat has a teminal velocity of around 60 MPH. Because its natural reaction is to adopt a position in which, when it hits the ground, its legs act as shock absorbers, a cat can often survive. Often, though, its chin will hit the ground with great force and its jaw bones will fracture.

But do no attempt to test this information for real otherwise you will be liable for prosecution!

I hope you're not thinking of throwing any cats to test this out! However, I'm not really sure why that is. My cat hasn't mastered that yet (and he's 7 years old), he destroyed his hind quarter permanently because he fell off the deck steps. Not a very big fall either, but it's the way he landed that did it. So you see, not all cats can land on all fours. Please don't harm any animals, that would just be so wrong.

A cat's body structure is incredibly elastic and nimble, and they have very fast reflexes. When falling, they usually have enough time to twist their body around and "parachute" themselves to slow themselves down and land on their feet evenly.

It's still a strain, though, and they will get hurt if they fall too far, too fast, or too often (just like you get shin splints from jumping).

As for quietly, well, you've never had a 15-pounder jumping off the furniture at four in the morning....

I truly hope this question is because you are curious and not thinking of doing anything stupid to an animal, because that would make you a morally corrupt individual needing serious psychiatric intervention!
