I say both...hair color usually takes best and distributes the color most evenly if it's being applied to healthy hair. So deep condition your hair a day or two before you color (I would also recommend getting a trim, but that's just me).
Then also condition AFTER you color to replenish the moisture lost in the process.
To keep it looking fresh you'll also want to deep condition every week or two, depending on how dry your hair tends to be.

wash your hair and make sure its super clean. then color in, then wash it a again with allllitttlee shampoo and lots of condtioner and if you can/r up for it, leave the in conditioner. You definately dont want split ends, right? conditioner is the key!
