Why is it that people always assume there is some sort of magical breed that is perfect. There is no perfect dog. NONE.

Your happiness with your dog is PRIMARILY based on how well you match your wants/needs/desires in a dog to the typical behavior for the type of dog you buy.

You need to sit down and figure out what you want a dog for, then go to the library and get a book called The Right Dog fro You. Read it and find the breeds that most match what you want. Then look for those breeds.

And remember that the SECOND MOST IMPORTANT factor in your relationship with your dog will be how much time you spend with it and how well you train it to be part of your family.

How good your dog is is almost entirely based on YOUR behavior. So start off right by doing REAL research. Get away from the computer and go to the library.

Best for what?

Do you live in the city? Suburbs? Country?

Are you home during the day? How long will the dog be alone?

Are you active or a couch potato?

Show dog or pet?

Any allergies?

Watch dog or guard dog?

Have you ever owned a dog before?

The best dog to get is one that suits YOUR personality. Like finding a mate that you 'match' with. If you are an active, energetic, playful, etc. person, then that should be reflected in your breed choice. If you are relaxed and layback, or boring, then get a cat.
Some cross breeds have health problems so it's best to do some research on which. One of my favs is Jack Russell-Chihuahua mix.
Also be sure to buy from a reputable seller (Humane Society) and that your pet has all it necessary shots.
Choose one as if you could choose your kids.

depends, what is your activity level? living situation? rent/own? willingness to groom? do you like something that will love you from the floor, or from your lap?
Remember, no matter how low maintenance the type of dog you get, they are still allot of work, and at least 15 years (more or less) of responsibility-time and financial.
You MUST train them (untrained dogs are unruly, and no fun for anyone) vaccinate yearly, spay/neuter, housebreak (I'm opposed to strictly outdoor dogs, they are a social animal and need to be part of a "pack" or family to be secure and happy..and not annoy neighbors with barking and pooping in other yards)
If you don't have the time for these things, the dog could end up sick, miserable, pregnant, or dangerous!
I myself own a pit bull/black lab, a German Shepherd, and a Norwegian elk hound, and each is wonderful to me in their own way..of course I take the time necessary to make sure they are respectful members of the family and society.

I would always say get 1 from a dog rehooming centre they do all ages and all breeds!
i have got 1 that i got when he was a year old and he is a gem!!
Also a cross breed is much better health wise purebreds are so mass bred nower days they have so many health problems that are costly to sort and heartbreaking to watch!!!!

My staffordshire bull terrier is my Angel!

You can't go wrong with a lab or lab mix! They are loyal, loving, very smart, easy to train and big enough to hug on! I lost mine aobut 4 1/2 months ago and miss him deeply. He was the best dog I ever had.

How much space do you have? Is this dog for security or just a friend? Do you have kids or other animals? Can you afford to feed a large dog? My vote is for Great Dane or Doberman.

"Best" is in the eye of the beholder. It depends on what you want in a dog. You'll have to decide for yourself. There are many things to consider such as size, temperament, coat length, activity level, if you have allergies that limits your choices, and whether or not you want purebred or a mutt. Both have advatages and disadvantages. Go to the AKC website and read about breeds that interest you. Or go to PetFinder to look for dogs at local shelters.

Guess I'll get a thumbs down too, regardless I'd have to agree with German Shepherd.

You need to have the space for them, be able to afford to feed them and you MUST train them though.

If all of the above are met - you will never find a more loyal and loving companion.
