if you didn't recieve a warning from a massenger of God, then God may forgive. but if you recieve the warning and understood the purpose of the warning and rejected, then you are with the mercy of God, if He wants he may punish you, or if He wants he may let you go.

Your answer is relevant, but has a relavent answer too, however I am surprised and saddened to see some of the answers, I think one ought to do a little research and rather then believing in gossip or hear-say and jumping to conclusions.
Islam is the last and the right religion, and Muhammad (may peace be upon him) was the last messnger of God, there being around 170000 others, which include Jesus, Moses, Abraham etc.
Before Islam Christianity was the true religion and before it Jews etc, Islam is the modifed shape and is now the religion to be adopted.

before Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) was born Allah sends many prophets and messengers to teach the Islam to the peoples those peoples who follow the teachings of Islam at that times and follows the Messngers or Prophets of Allah and Decleared that theire is no God except Allah were muslims and those who did not follow the islamic teachings and belive in one God were called "Kafir/Yahodi" non muslims these non muslims directly goto hell because they donot follow the islamic teachings and does not belive in one God that is only Allah. But those who accept that there is no God except Allah were not go to hell. The first person on this earth was Hazrat Adam Alihislam and he knows the Islam, who is Allah then there is no such questions remains that no one can knew about Islam or Allah. i give u a simple example the first House on this earth was the Khana-e-Kaba you see on arabic or muslim media where all muslims go to perform Hajj in Saudi Arabia that was first build by Hazarat Adam that is the prof of Islam in this world.

People who followed Prophet's(Abraham, Moses, david, Jesus, Mohamed) teachings were considered as followers of GOD and goes to Paradise. But the reason for sending new prophets is due to corruption of the religion by men.
So to answer your question, people who died before Islam, and if they followed the prophet has followed GOD, and deserve Heaven
