Hi,I want to know what kind of stuff can you build with a computer engineering diploma/degree?Can you build like cell phones,PDAs and stuff like this? And what can you build with the knowledge of microelectronics?Answers from engineers preferred. Thanks

It depends on what type of engineering you study:

Civil engineering - bridges, buildings, roads, trenches, anything big that doesn't move, in general

Mechanical Engineering - cars, engines, motors, anything that moves, has gears, etc.

Electrical Engineering - cell phones, PDAs, TVs, anything electrical

Chemical Engineering - chemical plants and chemicals, waste water treatment plants

With a computer engineering degree, you might design computer programs, or you might design circuitry in cell phones and PDA's and stuff. A dual degree in computer and electrical engineering would be very useful for that type of stuff. If you want to deal with microelectronics, chemistry might also be helpful (especially electrochemistry).

An engineering degree gets you in the door of a company. It doesn't mean you can build anything.

If you look at the PDA or cell phone, it takes a computer engineer to write the code to process the signals , an electrical engineer to design the circuits, a mechanical engineer, to figure out how to cram it all into a small package, a materials engineer to select the correct materials to build it out of, a production engineer to figure out how to make it, a quality engineer to make sure it works when it's built.... and the same type of engineers to design and build the machines to produce it.

p.s. You may need a civil engineer to design the parking lot outside you plant.

With computr science & it is possible to develop softwares. But for developing cellphones, pda , it will require knowledge of electonics as well as computer.
