He's 26 and gets extremely angry over little things. When he starts drinking he is very happy but then something sets him off and he gets into a rage. He wants everything his way. I would like to get him some help, but really don't know how to talk to him about it without him getting mad at me.

I agree with what B. said and what most others seem to think, which is, it's hard to tell here whether you have bi-polar, another mood disorder, or alcoholism. Often, they come together. Your challenge is not so much the diagnosis and treatment, a good psychiatrist will do that. Your challenge is finding a way to persuade him to seek help, if he denies that he has a problem and resents your pointing things out like that to him. You might want to do it when he's not mad, if you catch him in a receptive mood, and say less than you'd really like to so he does not get mad and shut off, just to plant a seed. Also, think of a good friend of his that you could enlist in helping you help your brother realize he's got issues. I doubt that your parents can, but if he is receptive to them, by all means, do try them.

Tell your brother that you love him very much and that you are concerned about him. That on several occassion you have noticed that when he drinks his mood is happy, however, shortly after that he becomes angry and that because of this reason you are deeply worried about and for his safety. Let him know that you don't know what you would do without him if something bad were to happen to him. Then say, will you please allow me to accompany you to see a doctor to find out what is causing these sudden mood changes. At that point, all you can do is sit back and wait for a response. Good Luck ;-)

Maybe the drinking is his problem' there are many many places for him to get help, talk with him or write him a letter knowing how much you care... This might trigger him to do the right thing, either seek help wit the drinking and any other issues he may have.. Have you talked to your parents about this?? they should help as well... best of luck from a CL friend

There could be alot of different problems going on, Bipolar is a mental illness that consist of mood swings eg. very happy for about 3 months and very depressed for about 6 months. From what I read in your question it sounds more like intermittent explosive disorder or alcoholism. There is some medication for intermitten explosive disorder if that is what his diagnosis is and of course there is AA if it is alcoholism. Good Luck!

Show him kindness by buying a little thing for him from time to time. Pray for him and take him to church with you when possible.

In the Beginning God created heavens and earth.
God gives you air to breathe and sunshine to enjoy.
God gives you water to drink and food to eat.
God gives you a wonderful body and sound mind, to live.
God loves you, and you are precious to Him.
Son of God died on the Cross to save us from condemnation.
Jesus’ love is boundless and everlasting.
We have the hope of Heaven through Jesus.
Life therefore has fantastic and glorious future!
(Digestion of above can even prevent depression and suicide attempt.)

sounds like an anger problem not bipolar. Sorry, not much you can do. So he gets mad at you, he'll get over it. Talk to him and see what happens.
